Hi

I am looking for the "milan" lable soundtrack for the 'liza minnelli' version of "Stepping Out" arranged and conducted by Peter Matz preferably on CD. Its proving very tricky to find. If any one can be of any help I would be most gratefull.

thanks

OK,

The British Library has this in their sound archive.

This is how I found out:

Go to their website with the following link:

British Library Sound Archive

Click on "Search the Sound Archive Catalogue"

Click on "advanced search"

Enter "peter matz" or "liza minnelli" in the name box and "stepping out" in the title box and click the search button

You should get a list of six items which I think are tracks off the recordings. They definitely have the Milan label recording from 1991, but I haven't completely got my brain around how their database works.

They will copy stuff for a fee, but you will need to get clearance from the copyright owners.

Other options:

Second-hand record shops

Local authority libraries

Academic institution libraries

Track down the record company

Put a classified ad in The Stage

Liza Minelli fan club (if such a thing exists!)

Record collectors magazines and websites

etc etc

I seem to recall a shop in or near Covent Garden specialising in musical or theatre recordings - perhaps someone has the name and address. (But I could be mistaken - it's been a long time).

Hope this helps,

Dave.

"Dress Circle" on Monmouth Street (the other side of Long Acre from Covent Garden).

I'm impressed with your knowledge of London, which is far better than my knowledge of Chester!!

Well, I do spend quite a lot of time there - and I often pop into Dress Circle if I'm in town on a Wednesday evening, to pick up a copy of The Stage 12 hours before it reaches WHSmiths.

You should come visit Chester - it's lovely! (The only thing that could possibly improve it would be if it was moved four miles to the west, so that it was in Wales :P )

Yeh that did surprise me when I went in there last week (on Wednesday obviously) I got it a full 18 hours or so earlier than I normally would do!

Handy!

thanks for the british library info I'll see if I can get copyright issues sorted.

Dress Circle is a great resource and I have been in touch with them already but to no avail.

Local authority libraries Bizzarely this is where we got the track that the director chose except it is distorted tape and beyond reasonable repair.

Liza Minelli fan club (if such a thing exists!) Someone else suggested that too it's a good Idea.

Record collectors magazines and websites again bizzarely I have managed to track down a copy in POLAND! anyone know how long somthing would take to get from poland (by post rather than on foot)

Thanks for the advice hopefully the British Library prove fruitful if not there's always poland...

Euan,

anyone know how long something would take to get from poland (by post rather than on foot)

Information like this can be found on the Royal Mail website. It says air mail to Poland should take four days. I doubt the transit time will be significantly different in the other direction.

Provided that you feel the vendor is trustworthy, don't be afraid to buy internationally. I have ordered CDs, records, and books from all over the world and have never had any problems with the international post. Most dealers ship internationally on a regular basis. Make sure it gets sent by air mail, insured if possible, and that they complete the customs declaration correctly (you may have to pay VAT and/or import duty).

Credit cards are the best way of making the purchase, as you can get a refund from your credit card company if the goods don't arrive or are defective. If they can't take them, you may be able to do a bank transfer, but for something as small as a CD, the easiest/cheapest way to pay might well be to get cash in their preferred currency from a bureau de change and send it to them by international registered post.

Let us know how you get on.

Best wishes,

Dave.

  • 13 years later...

I realise this is an old thread but I'm now in the same situation.

I'm working with an amdram group doing this show in the Autumn and ideally need to find a clean recording (no tapping) of the music for the finale dance routine. Sadly they've already started rehearsing to the OST version (with taps) so it really needs to be the same structure/tempo etc.

I've spent half an hour or so surfing and had no joy so far.

Is it available? Has anyone got any more recent pointers?

Eddie

Edit to add....Ah ok so perhaps I should have actually listened properly to the sound track CD first.

When it gets to the tap sequence it's actually dual mono with music on the A leg and taps on the other.

Doh!
