Speaker System Help

I'm looking for some help and advice...

I Production Manage a weekly rep season over the summer and am looking to upgrade the sound system we currently have with is 2 hifi speakers FOH and 2 tall hihi speakers on stage run independantly off a 500w amp (I think) and an old hifi amp

The venue is a village hall for the rest of the year but seats about 220 for the theatre season, we don't use microphones so the speakers are used for effects and house music only.

The two FOH speakers developed a crackle last year when pushed to their limit so I want something with a bit more power but my problem is I don't have alot of money so ideally I'm just looking to replace them and might be able to get a cheap amp off a friend to add more power.

Does anyone have any suggestions of budget speakers that would do the job for me - I've found a few on amazon for just over the £130 mark for 2 - will I be wasting my money if I buy budget ones or will they do the job?

Any input would be great,

Many thanks in advance :** laughs out loud **:

There is nothing wrong with buying budget as long as you accept the limitations that brings. That said there are *LOADS* of budget speakers which will do the job for you and within your budget.

From the latest CPC flyer on my desk...

A pair of these

...are in budget, or even some of the smaller units it hat range.

I've found a few budget W-Audio speakers that may fit your wants. Also may be worth looking for some active Wharfedale speakers on ebay, I bought a pair of Wharfedale EVP-15P speakers for £200 about 3 or 4 years ago now and I've just upgraded and they still work fine.

I've seen some on ebay - linky.

(Mods, I'm not advertising, I just found these on ebay)

Hope this helps ;)

I know they are rather more expensive than you are looking for, but these: http://www.musicgeardirect.co.uk/tm-range/tm12h.html are really rather nice if you are aiming for something with a bit more oomph. If you get in touch with the company they may be able to knock the price down a touch.

Failing that at the cheaper end of things, I've had some good results using Pulse speakers (the 12" version of the ones Brian mentions) for just background music in a local pub, but just be warned, running them right at their limit tends to make them rather unhappy (1 hi-freq driver blown sounded pants the rest of the night).

Hope that helps,

you could always try some where like Maplins as they have some quite good sound systems for your budget also if I was you in 200+ sized venue I would be using at least rifle mics to pick up some stage noise and then you may be also able to get some more theatre work and you would make your money back in 1 summer, just a thought any way.

In a two hundred seater hall, I doubt that picking up stage noise is the problem - the OP did mention that it;s music and effects he needs.

Always a good move to check the question before answering something that wasn't actually asked!

hi,

theres always the thomann offerings:

Powered:

The box PA108A £104

or with a bit more power:

The box PA202A £160

Passive (so you'll need a separate amp):

The box PA108 £64

or with a bit more power:

The box PA202 £95

Or the THE BOX PA110(A) £89 passive £127 active, although the specs look wrong on the site for those, 250rms for passive or active version 80+50w

Although these boxes might be a little small depending on what your going to do, ok for background/quiet fx, but if your gonna need something abit louder the box PA302(a) might be better (but more money)..

I put some PA108s into a school hall with a thomann amp. It works really well, they just play CD music for assemblies..etc and their little school play.

Chris

Hmmm...

Liam, as you're a newcomer (welcome, by the way) unless you've lurked in the BR for a while you may not be aware that we can be a rather unforgiving group when faced with what might be termed as 'dodgy' advice from those who are at the beginning of their career/education in the theatre industry.

So, when presented with the above response to the OP's question...

Does anyone have any suggestions of budget speakers that would do the job for me
in a 220 seat village hall situation, it's prhaps best not to overthink the answers.

And picking up more theatre work on the basis of using a couple of rifles at said village hall is, well, pretty unlikely. (All due respects to the OP).

As the OP managed to wipe out the speakers with the amp already there, unless it's actually faulty, it will probably work fine, I'd think.
