paulears
I got a request from BECTU today to do a skillset questionnaire, but it's amazingly poorly designed. Question 2 deals with full-time/part-time/freelance status, but to get to question 2, you have to give an incorrect answer to question 1 which relates to which sector you work in. I need to tick 5 boxes for the sectors I currently work in, and the other part wants you to indicate at least one you used to work in, but no longer do. I can't tick any of those - and have to select just 1 from the other list. This will skew the results if all the freelancers just pick one at random. How they can design such a poorly thought out questionnaire, makes me realise how good some of ours (that we moan about) are!
TeeJay
Does this look like a private request, or a sector wide survey?
paulears
Sector wide, I think - but via BECTU. However, the actual questionnaire doesn't mention BECTU - so seems free to anyone,It's here
Grum
They appear to have added a "none of these" option at the bottom. Having now finished it I have to agree, very poorly written. For example, a question that asks me to type something in a box IF I have something to say but won't let me leave the box blank if I don't. TeeJay
The main thing that I noticed about this survey was that it wasn't looking at the theatre industry. The second thing I noticed was that I was able to redo the questionnaire straight away - no attempt to limit the number of times someone answers (which can lead to answers being skewed) I'm always intrigued that Skillset say they cover all the creative media's but don't really factor any live events into their structure - like we never use any digital technology ... There are a couple of limitations on the radio button questions sure, but the questionnaire wasn't all that bad - my wife and I are part of several consumer research groups and this questionnaire was about equal with them. Writing a questionnaire properly takes some work and it takes practice to get it right. It's also something that is rarely taught anywhere and it takes some experience to provide some leeway for the myriad of respondee's and yet still get meaningful results. paulears
I don't agree - skillset have been doing research for years, and if somebody like them doesn't know how to generate questions that will produce meaningful responses (that they then hawk around as fact!) then the results could so easily be contested - the survey does seem skewed to the video industry but that's not a problem - however, if too many non-video industry people contribute, this will mess the results up just like Blue Room polls!
