adambattey Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 Hi, Not sure where to post this really so opted for the General and hoping for the best...! I am currently trying to drag a production of Willy Russell's Our Day Out out of the proverbial mess and get it up and running.... but I'm hitting some difficulties as no one is willing to help at my work... Mainly... 1) Does anyone know of a place that I can borrow/hire P.E./Gymnasitics benches from (that you usually find in a school hall?) OR the easiest way to make around 20 cubes that are sittable on to use as props/staging? 2) Anyone know if a proper score for the show is available? I'm trying to work from the one in the back of the Methuin script and am struggling with the notation (or lack there of). Anything that anyone could offer in terms of the reheasal/production of the show would be gratefully recieved! Cheers guys, Adam
GridGirl Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 Presumably the rights-holders should be able to supply you with a score if one exists?
paulears Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 The play is licensed by Samuel French. Both script and libretto is available from them - plus the amateur non-educational rights.
adambattey Posted May 24, 2010 Author Posted May 24, 2010 Hi Guys, Cheers for the replies - I just came off the phone with SF when I posted this message - they say that the best that they have is the one in the back of script! :)
LXbydesign Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Im about to do this show (direct , LD and set designer!!) and I have to say, I think the score is rubbish. I am going to be replacing the songs from the script with pop songs - but meaningfull to the script!! For example, when Linda sings about 'im in love with sir', that song is being replaced by Jennifer Page - 'Crush'. Same meaning - so in the context of the play it works!! I was going to TRY and keep the original words of the songs and just change the music - but it was turning out to be to time consuming - so I just scrapped it altogther and used others.

Yeah, I is crappy to say the least! I am debating cutting out pretty much all the solos, keeping in the roudy bus ones (We're Off, Everywhere we go, Penny Chews) as they are more chanty than melodic and can be done without a score backing. The more meaningfull ones (I'm In Love With Sir, Why Can't It Always Be This Way) I'm thinking that we can get a solo piano/flute or something just to play the melody over the scene to set the moods...! My issue is tha the director doesn't know what he wants to do with any aspects!! ..... how are you doing the coach...? I have a few ideas but the team I'm working with say that they can't understand anything that I tell them/show them in pictures....!! Adam
LXbydesign Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Ok, after this reply, if you have any more questions, please could you PM them - or the MODS get fed up with 'one2one' chats going on openly!! Im staging quite simply as per the original production ie using boxes to represent the coach , zoo cages etc etc. I have banners and a flown 'letterbox' for projection surfaces , 3 central arches for entrance / exit (with the band behind) and will be hanging up lots of bunting and festoon lamp strings. My overall theme for the set is circus / fairground. Its just colourful, 'kiddie' and fun. Lighting will have our usual stock of generics, movers and LED Pars - but im also getting in some bubble machines! Sound will have the cast on radios, band mix and extra orchestrations running off Logic on a Mac. Sound also want to try out some surround sound stuff - which they can process from the Mac - so that will be interesting to hear ( I nearly said see! haha) Its only our summer musical - so its not the full scale production. It also a gateway for us to try new ideas technically - using this time as a 'dry run' before the idea is expanded and used for the bigger christmas show.
