Ynot Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Looking at getting a couple of external IP rated LED cans to do a bit of colour changing outside the theatre. One option is this one (can or flood type) manual here. I have a couple of questions for anyone who may have experience with these models. 1. The manual programs - can they do a nice slow cross fade colour to colour?2. If so, do they retain the setting when powered off? ie when switched off, will they come back on with the same program settings? I don't intend to run them DMX at all...
jamed2017 Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 I cant help you but I can point you in the right direction. Drop them an email info@elationlighting.com
Ynot Posted May 20, 2010 Author Posted May 20, 2010 Er, yes, I have indeed asked the question of the supplier, BUT I'm more interested in an impartial view from an actual user (if anyone has used them)...
AHYoung Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 These are made in china and available around the globe from "Different" manufacturers. We have 16 of the Ip67 battons and a load of interior pars all working on the VR system branded as SFX. its a nice option as you can run them on 5 ch per fixture DMX or via the built in memories. this allows static colour with RGB mixing which is handy for the brand colour kind of jobs or you can stick it on an autorun which gives the primaries then secondaries on a smooth fade with adjustable speed so if you just need an ever changing rainbow washing the venue, no effort required. You can set one unit as a master and it will send the data out to any other fixtures As far as I recal, if you power down, they come on in the last state, but ill check that out . Id be slightly circumspect that 2 cans will light an exterior of a venue, id be going for one batton every couple of metres. We obviously sell the things and would be happy to quote you, but we also go out and use the things and at the price they are fairly decent units and have served us well... so assuming the elation units and sfx ones are identical id recomend them. As a side note for a project we lit the exterior of a historic building and looked at loads of options with RGB fixtures with controllers etc and then realised that in general there are few things worse than a architectural wonder changing through every imaginable colour for no discernable reason, so went out and bought 15 18w red led fixtures, the building lit in red, looks great no messing about... cheers Alastair
Paul J Need Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Would it be worth spending a little extra dosh on a 1w or 3w outdoor version? These could also transfer on to stage when needed perhaps?
Modge Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Looking at getting a couple of external IP rated LED cans to do a bit of colour changing outside the theatre.I happen to know Gary (i.e. CSR) who you've mentioned useing in the past has a load in his hire stock, it may be worth talking to him about them.

I'll have a word, ta.E2A - now you mention it I have seen some of the IP rated LED panels he has - these may well be a bit OTT (as well as expensive) for the job, but I've just mailed him anyway for a chat. Alastair - we're not looking at lighting the building - just the tree just outside.Oddly, we have a large tree sitting JUST outside the main door which is rather in the way but as the roots extend under the foyer, cutting it down (even if the greens would allow it!) would kill the roots and give all sorts of subsidence problems. So - as an old adage goes, if you can't hide it, make a feature of it! We're looking at ways of making what's essentially a drab, flat frontage look a little more like a theatre entrance - hopefully with a nice new door canopy with downlighters and the colour washing of said arboreal feature is something under consideration. A quote by PM would be useful, therefore... :P
AHYoung Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 In answer to questions above, having just got a fixture out and checked... if you power down a ficture, it will revert to the same state when repowered, so yes if you want chases everytime the power is aplied with no further intervention, it works. The built in programmes are basically all the primaries , secondaries, white { after a fashion} then a clunky step chase through them followed by a smooth crossfade between them, so if you select the last programe and turn the speed right down its fairly effective. cheers
