LX-Dave Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 I thought THIS might interest some on here... Hereford's local, annual music festival, 2010, was looking to be the best yet... and then it wasn't at all. After unfortunate events at the end of Wyeside 2008, there was uncertainty as to there being a 2009 festival at all, but camping was dropped and the show went ahead. New organisers took over ready for the 2010 event, and with a new venue and some great bands, it looked as though the event would be a good one. And then it was suddenly cancelled. From the website above it seems to be an issue with licensing... but is it really as simple as it sounds? Herefordshire council have on a few occasions in the past put a stop to live music events, on any technicality they could find. One wonders whether the same could be true here? Attitudes locally are of the opinion that the council "don't want the hastle" of allowing a music festival to take place... yet the annual may fair takes over the city centre and causes caos...? Any views?

kerry davies Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 The excuse given to one of my friends was that the licensing notices around the venue had been torn down and they therefore had failed to fulfill notification provisions. I find it amazing that they have organised an alternative date at such short notice with all the rearrangements, booking the venue, hiring kit, generally changing everything and then sorting the licensing. They must be really good... or... As it happens a friend of mine was their booker but they sort of upset her and now she isn't...wonder why? Yes Hereford has refused licences to various events but heaven help me if I have seen worse applications by some of those wanting to put them on. http://councillors.herefordshire.gov.uk/mg...p;zTS=undefined will give you an idea of how far away from professional some organisers are. Don't rush to blame the council until you know what the full facts are, I'm not blaming anyone but I have my suspicions.
jamed2017 Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 It is a pitty. With glade going under aswell it does seem that festivals are getting wrapped up in red tape now more than ever.
tolley1466 Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 Heard about Wyeside. A few of my friends were going! You'd think that a council would welcome things like festivals as they bring in a bit of trade etc. It's like in Malvern, we have about one outdoor event every year and that gets complaints from the oldies. It makes me angry!
Jivemaster Posted May 19, 2010 Posted May 19, 2010 I used to frequent the Sidmouth Festival. It had been running for 25 years then and the local still hated it, BUT it filled every hotel in town and the nearby towns it filled every shop bar pub and cafe, without it the whole town would be struggling! Then that's the same with Devon and tourists! It takes a very skilled management team to bring an event to fruition each year, usually the next festival is announced and the one before so the dates and licences should be certain 18 months before the event.
