spotblaster
I regularly use a number of scrollers from different manufacturers all with different non-linearities. On my Strand consoles I write a profile for each type of scroller and apply it to the DMX output controlling that scroller. Changing scrollers on a show by show basis is easy, the profile stays with the address in the patch and it is simply allocated to the desired channel on the new show. On MagicQ we have a number of definable curves stored as csv files these equate to profiles on the old Strand desks. I can successfully apply these to DMX outputs controlling dimmers and fixture attributes but am having difficulty applying them to the colour attribute of scrollers. In MagicQ a scroller can be patched in a number of ways. My preferred one is as a 2 channel "virtual" fixture with two virtual DMX addresses that are then allocated to two real DMX addresses one for intensity and one for the colour attribute. I can get this to work and the scroller to operate but don't seem to be able to apply a curve to the DMX output controlling the colour attribute of the scroller. Is this a bug or a feature I wonder or merely that I haven't found out how to do it yet? Has anyone else had a similar experience or can give any handy hints on how best to patch scrollers in MagicQ. I am keen to use the 2 channel generic scroller so that the useful move when dark feature can be used. I could of course write a colour pallete for each scroller frame and then laboriously update every frame for every scroller. This would have to be done for every new show and is because of that undesirable. The ability to apply a curve to the DMX output means scroller interchangeability is possible and easy. Chris "Ken" Kennedy
Hi Spotblaster, For scrollers you are best to make a personality for each different scroller type and gel string you have. This allows full identifiction of each of the gels with icons and allows you to use the personality for all your different shows rather than trying to botch it with dimmer curves a la Strand. Its very easy, just go to Patch. Choose the head you want to base it on (e.g. Generic Scroller 2 chan). Then go to Edit Head and Save As choosing a new name - e.g. Spotblaster Scroller_gels1. This will automatically set the Manufacturer as Spotblaster, Type as Scroller and mode as gels1. Then simply edit the Ranges (View Ranges) for the particular gel string adding each colour in with the appropriate values. If you wish you can also choose the colour icon. When you have finished do a Save. Now every time you need this fixture in a show just choose Spotblaster, Scroller, Gels 1 and patch it in and the colours will be there. I hope this helps Chris Chris KennedyChamSys Ltd
