Hi all,

I was just wondering whether anyone has any views on the Apache Low Profile safety trainers? here

I'm currently looking too upgrade the steelies I've got at the moment but no-where near too where I live stock any steel toe cap trainers hence why I'm looking online for these...

Anyone got any other supplies or shoes that they would recommend instead off these?

Many thanks,

James

One big issue I have always had with trainers is the lack of ankle and shin support, when something does hit the toe it can flick back towards the leg and do just as much damage and often more to the ankle.

That said for everyday warehouse stuff most people just wear normal trainers so these will offer more protection but not as much as boots.

Just my 2p

I've bought safety shoes online before and I would like to disuade anyone else from doing so. They are crucial to your safety and comfort and trying them on before you buy them is imperative. I'd only buy online if you have had the exact same shoes before.

In my other hobby (working on a steam railway), we get subsidised Steel toes. I orded mine without trying a pair on, and they fit well. The only odd thing is that they've worn through the thick socks that I wear with them really quickly.

That reminds me, I have to clean the ash, coal dust and general cr*p off them...

Without wanting to come across as too 'newbie-ish', which shops stock steel toe capped boots? Do any high-street shoe shops stock them, or do they have to be bought from a special stockist? Many thanks.

I get my safety trainers from shoe zone,,or if your passing Toddington services (northbound) the petrol station has a few in stock, just by the coffee machine.

AFAIK, the most common type of steel toe cap boot is the 'rigger boot'. The style that most builders wear. For theatre, you'll want a pair that look quite smart. Mine (as stated above) came with subsidy from a preserved railway, so are a black leather boot which look pretty smart.

If you go into a large shoe shop, most of them (such as the shoe superstore near me, the name of which I cannot remember; and 'Priceless Shoes') sell at least rigger boots. If you have no luck at your shoe shop, then you want to head over to CPC, Screwfix and the like.

Shoe Zone do them?! I might pop in there tomorrow too see if they've got any decent ones! I assumed the only place would be a local place called pecks... Its like a builders type shop...

Anywhere else that might sell them around Cambridge? Ideally Newmarket or Ely?

Cheers,

You may want to try Arco.

Yup, Arco have a huge range. The Dr Marten 193 Chukka Boots are the ones I always go for. Have tried various others in the past, but nothing's as good as the DMs.

There are several work wear shops near me that sell safety boots wellies and shoes. Also the local shoe shops all seem to have a small selection for sensible prices. Not hard to find if you look retail, without trying trade shops or catalogues.

Many branches of Millets sell safety boots and some of the more 'trainer' type.

You can also pick up a pack of socks designed for work boots, especially those with steel toe caps so you might find them more comfortable and longer lasting. Failing that spring the money for Bridgedale socks, you can't beat 'em! If you go for wool + coolmax cotton bridgedales you get a 3 year guarantee which is fairly impressive! Also if you go for the merino wool instead of the tough wool, they wont maintain their cushion if you're on your feet for many many hours but they will keep themselves clean! Merino wool doesn't support the growth of bacteria which are needed to break down the amino acids in sweat into the substances that create those characteristic odours!
