I am going to be working on a show called Raynerd the fox. And in this play there is a massive tree, and the tree needs to go through all four seasons...I can not think of how!! ANy suggestions??

Gobos in various colours. Project onto backdrop where basic tree is painted.

Projector with various images and/or video sequences.

'Real' tree with pale leaves that will disappear into the backdrop, colour them with light to pick them out.

Do not show the tree at all, but suggest it's way above the theatre's ceiling.

 

Many different methods, but depends what the 'tree' is and where it's going to be!

Lecturers?? I am actually a student at a university, and the play is at a local highschool that I work at int he summer. But anyway, the tree is actually almost center stage and is massive, someone actually has to sit in it for almost the entirity of the show. So the tree about the ceiling thing wouldn't work. The stage it self is almost a thrust but more like a procenium on steriods. I know how to make big trees by using wood(how ironic) chicken wire, and dutch. Just the ability to show all four seasons I proving difficult, and I believe it starts in the summer!(the play that is not when it is really occuring!)

What about fiber optics ? like the christmas trees that you get. Im not sure if it would work how you want but it might enhance the effect.

 

How to get the leaves off I have no idea.

 

If the winter requires snow and is before the interval then you could drop snow on it then 'hover/blow off' during the interval.

Build the tree with something solid like scaffolding then dress it with wood and chicken wire etc.

For the branches how about some very thin white tissue paper over wire to give the leaves some shape. Uplight, and down light in various greens and brown to give the changing of the seasons. If your feeling adventurous you could look into a way of making the leaves fall from the tree in winter and then using something else to givs the impression of buds coming through.
