Hi im looking at this cheap desk

Ebay Control Desk

and was wondering if it would work in the uk plug socket as its says 120V ?

Thanks

It looks like it's got an external power adaptor (a.k.a. wall-wart) so provided the connector (between the wall wart and the desk) is something you can get hold of, a standard power supply from the likes of Maplin should be able to do the job quite easily.

Why don't you ask the person selling it?

It appears to me that the unit runs on a 9-12V 220mA DC supply, and that it comes supplied with a PSU for 110V mains. You may therefore need to acquire an alternative PSU to use it on a 220-240V AC supply.

Edit: bear in mind that low cost units that you import from outside of the EU may well not be so cheap once you've satisfied HMRC

or just buy the same unit within the UK?

ive seen the same controller badged as TRANSCENSION and CHAUVET and other brands, its a very common OEM unit

also try Thomann, I have their stairville version which works in this country, plus you get the 3 year warranty

You wont get a warranty with this unit, you are gambling on quality and how up to date the software is and these items tend to take 2-3 weeks to arrive (regardless of what their advert says!!! Boats dont move that quickly!!)

Something designed for 120 volts certainly cant be used on our 230/240 volt supply.

In this case though the equipment uses an external power supply to reduce the mains voltage to that required internaly.

Simply replace with a similar external power supply designed for 230/240 volts.

As others suggest though, it might be better to obtain a UK spec one in the first place as this would avoid any import duties and should have a warenty, unlike a fleabay unit.

Am I the only one here with some concern that the OP's signature contains the phrase "Electrical Installation and Operation in the entertainment industry" and yet he clearly cannot identify a wall wart power supply on an eBay picture?

Oh Boatman, there's cynical. Josh is obviously a lot more clued in than me. I can't keep up with tax, legislation, H&S, CPD, insurance or finances for my little one man band. He is MD of a company with several staff while still at school, out of my league.

At least he has filled his profile in which gives him brownie points compared to a lot of the other "professionals" on the BR.
