johntalbot Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 Can anyone recommend the best settings for the channels to use the LS9 as a recording desk connected with adat to an M Audio lightbridge and then PC?I want to be able to remix the sound on the desk after it has been multi tracked and also to put it out in different mix formats to the recording studio, headphone monitors, etc. any help majorly appreciated!
Bobbsy Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 My home studio set up (which I've also used when multi track recording live events) is a DM1000 mixer via the Lightbridge to my PC so it's not all that dis-similar to what you have. First question: is this purely for recording or is the mixer being used at the same time to do live sound at an event or show? I ask this because this affects how I set up my board. If it's purely for recording, my set up is to do post fader direct outs to the Lightbridge (Slot 1, 1-16) on one layer and bring the PC output back into the mixer on a second layer. This allows me to swap between record and playback at the touch of a layer button--the only thing to be careful of is to make sure all the playback faders are muted when you record--I do this by using scene presets. If I'm recording a live show, I feed the individual channels to the PC in the same way but make it pre-fader so level adjustments done for the live audience don't affect the recording. I also don't worry about bringing the PC output back into the mixer until I get back to the studio. All these adjustments are done on the output patch screen. You'll also have to tell your Lightbridge and mixer to operate at the same sample rate/bit depth. Similarly, it's worth using coax connectors to drive the Lightbridge Wordclock from the LS9 output--you can get in a bit of a pickle if you try to derive wordclock from the ADAT link (though I use two slots--if you only need 16 tracks/1 slot this might be easier). Sorry this is waffling a bit--if you have any specific questions feel free to get back to us. Bob
johntalbot Posted April 20, 2010 Author Posted April 20, 2010 Thanks for that. I will give it a try and let you know my results. Had a terrible job setting up the light pipe but think it may have been me being a bit thick!!!
johntalbot Posted April 20, 2010 Author Posted April 20, 2010 Got it all working great with protools recording fantastically. Am now going to try to get the ls9 to communicate with cubase studio 4 as I believe that the settings on the ls9 are far more compatible with cubase studio 4 than with protools. any advice greatly appreciated.
Bobbsy Posted April 20, 2010 Posted April 20, 2010 Sorry, can't help with that--I'm an Adobe Audition user. However, frankly I'd just record in whatever software is most stable then edit/mix in something else if I preferred. So long as your DAW software is happy with ASIO, any of them should recognise up to 32 inputs from the Lightbridge. Bob
