wmcalin
Hi Can anyone recommend a low cost limiter to stop DJ’s clipping the amps and damaging speakers… Have covered this off in the past with the DSP but client has a very tight budget. Any pointers would be appreciated.
tolley1466
How about a simple compressor? How tight is a tight budget?
bassnote
- Behringer SUPER-X PRO CX3400 crossover and limiter £80- DBX 266XL compressor / limiter £90?
donald463
Suggest you also budget around £10 for tamperproof cover for limiter.
Chris Beesley
Behringer DCX2496 loudspeaker management works a treat for this.
johndenim
Suggest you also budget around £10 for tamperproof cover for limiter. Or even save money on the limiter, and get a tamper proof cover for the amps.....?
bruce
A tamper-proof cover for the amps is no substitute for a limiter. The latter prevents the signal rising above a predefined level. The former means that you just have to drive your source a bit harder before screwing things up.

abbotsmike
The only people who will overdrive a system into massive distortion are the ones that don't know what they are doing, or don't care. Heavy distortion/clipping, even at lower volumes can still kill drivers, especially compression drivers.

A limiter will do exactly what it says - place a brick-wall limit on the maximum audio level that can reach your amp. A good one will have enough headroom to cope with most signals that the dafties can throw at it - as the level increases, it drops the gain, so the output level stays the same. Eventually it'll start to distort, but the output will still be low. On the other hand, if you have no limiter, and just turn down the amp gain (which is just a passive attenuator on the input) then that can be overcome by making the input signal a bit hotter. It offers little protection against the dafties.
wmcalin
Hi All The client only wants to spend around £100.... I know !! so it looks like a Behringer compressor/limiter fits the bill. Seem to be very good value for money. I'll also purchase a cover and fit with anti tamper screws to prevent adjustment. Thanks again for the suggestions. I treat all kit with great respect as I earn my living from it edit : if money is really tight, skytec 2 channel limiter/compressor £40 ish on ebay
Sound In Gloucestershire
you can pickup second hand Formula Sound AVC2 Limiters for between £100 and £150 very easily pretty much the best option ive found for DJ's as it has pretty red lights on it and doesnt actually drop the volume of the music drastically

I have taken several sound recording/live sound courses and know what I am doing. It's true though that a lot of DJ's are of the bedroom variety and have little or no real experience or training.
