I know this is an oldish thread, but I've just had to send back another ZX1, and as this has happened to me before, I thought I'd add my opinion - which is that they are still near the top of my list for small install speakers, but I wouldn't ever take them on the road. I've taken them apart, and the plastic used is prone to fracture if the case gets dropped; the pillars joining front and back, and the neck of the horn are particularly vulnerable.

So - check them when they arrive, look after them, and once they are bolted to a wall, fine. But not for mobile situations, IMHO.

We have had several ZX1i (install version) delivered damaged, the HF driver snaps off the plastic horn and rattles around in the bottom of the cabinet. If fact I returned one only last week. I still like them on installs, but having to go back to a job to put up the one missing speaker is a pain, and starting to prove costly.

A few weeks ago Shuttlesound delivered a pair of ZX4s for me to demonstrate to a customer, guess what..... a compression driver was rattling around in the bottom of one of them! I ended up with only one to demonstrate. I'm not sure if it's the carrier that is at fault, although that wouldn't surprise me, or if they get damaged when shipped from the US. Ours are now being bubble wrapped before being shipped to us!

I'm glad it's not just us that are having this problem.

We've had similar issues with ours. Roughly 1/3rd of them have arrived damaged. I remember similar complaints on ProSoundWeb, so I think we can assume that it's not the transatlantic journey that causes the problem. (Plus, smaller courier deliveries are more likely to throw individual boxes around, less likely to happen with a larger quantity in a palletised shipment)

However, with decent covers, the dozen or so ZX1s that we have in hire stock have survived the past year or so pretty well. Notably, two survived being sent flying when the person carrying them slipped on an icy path.

Great sounding little speakers - we've been very happy with them otherwise.

They are awesome actually!! A great deal of punch for your buck!!! They seem no to go as low as the ZX1, but the mid and top end detail is breathtaking. 800w watts of power in something so small and less than 10kgs is rather fab also.

We ordered them on the spot and our first batch will arrive with us early next week!

I refer to the OP "NEW EV ZXA1 800W ACTIVE SPEAKERS"

however, if you need more info:

•Integrated 800 watt power amplifier

•90° x 50° coverage pattern

•123 dB maximum SPL

Frequency Response (-3 dB) - 60 Hz - 20 kHz Hz Full Range Mode

Frequency Response (-10 dB) - 48 Hz - 20 kHz Hz Full Range Mode

Crossover Frequency - 1800 Hz

All that said - they still sound smashing !!! ;)

Just had a demo down at the Audio Works in Surrey and have to say they as pretty damn amazing for the size . The build is pretty good aswell the vocal and top end is great and with our sba760 subs they are perfect.

If you want quality sound in as small and lightweight a cab as possible don't think you will find better!

I would agree with ben here 800w in a box made with such small drivers when a zx5 is only rate at something like 550. Me thinks EV are maybe aiming these at DJs by making them 'seem' massivly powered.
