shuggs
Does anyone know why the magnet on some drivers I'm trying to re-cone seem to have moved off center.Have re-coned a couple of 18" F1 that were cooked then opened up 3 8" and the gap where the coil sits is smaller on one side than the other as if the magnets moved. I thought they might have been dropped or bashed but all 3 are the same and I've been assured by the owner that theyve not been physically damaged. Is there a specific cause of this?Has anyone else seen this? ThanksShuggs

It may be that as we move towards lighter baskets and magnets to reduce the overall weight of touring rigs they just can't take the knocks they used to take. Brian
A typical drive unit......part B is what moves because it's not often fixed to the front plate and basket (parts C and G). If the speaker has got very hot then it can move on it's own as things expand with the heat and glues break down BUT it's also just as likely that they have been dropped. KevinE
Ive had the pressed baskets deform due to the cabinet being dropped, it takes very little (almost invisible) movement before the coil scrapes.
shuggs
Thanks for the replies. I figured it was most likely damage from an impact, but it did seem odd that all 3 were damaged in this way? I guess for the cost of a new magnet assembly and new cone it'd be just as easy and not much more money to replace the whole unit.
mostlyharmless
This could be a manufacturing issue with the glue used to attached the two magnets together or similar if it has happened in multiple units. Phone F1 and ask about it.
