VGA over distance and through a hole!!

Ive read through a lot of topics on VGA and composite and have decided that VGA will be the best route as I only have to go about 20m however between floors there is only a small hole cut through the mez floor and a vga plug wont fit through it!

Is there anything I can get that has a smaller plug on it that will maintain the quality of the VGA? Or should I speak to someone about getting the hole made bigger?

I know you could probably make the cables up yourself but Im hopeless with a soldering iron!!

Thanks

soldering VGA connectors isn't fun at the best of times.

You could use 5way mini coax, crimp BNC's on the end, and then use a breakout like these ones. (These are VDC, hence expensive, but there are cheaper ones knocking about)

Just make sure you get the correct sized BNCs for the cable... from experience mini BNC's don't work with normal coax cable...

Saying that, as long as its out of the way and discreet, the cheapest/easiest way is just to get a bigger hole!

Using the 5 way BNC could be an option but while it would get through the hole it will cost me a lot more in cable. I could get the hole made bigger and then stick something over it Im sure but the other problem which Ive only just remembered is that I had planned on feeding them through a length of scaffold to go from the computer to mez floor for protection.

4 vgas through a piece of scaff? :)

Main problem with that would be cost Jonny, I need at least 4, possibly more, at each end. Think its just going to be much easier to get the drill out!!

Very true, however the 4 VGA's through the scaf pole isn't going to be fun either...

True, will have to rethink that. Its not essential but thought it would be the easiest way to protect the cables and to maintain the industrial feel. Suppose I could always get a metal strip box made that could store the cables.

There is another way. You could use the following cables from Kramer Electronics http://www.kramerelectronics.co.uk/product...=748&sf=166 and couple them with this wall plate device: http://www.kramerelectronics.co.uk/product...del.asp?pid=362

Or alternatively - you could convert the signal to CAT 5 and then back again, though the cost would be more than the solution above. If you want some further advice during office hours call 01296 330011

I was going to suggest that there must be a cheaper VGA wallplate from CPC than the clever little box one but I didn't get round to finding one.

Re the cable run, I'm no vidiot but we regularly run a projector setup in our venue with a 20m cable to the projector after it's come up through the tie line from the stage - must be a 50m run in total and never given us problems. Whether this is outside the spec I don't know.

Edit: Just had a look and those Pro-signal VGA cables are still on offer at CPC as well, 30m for £18.50 down from £33. Order code AV1481661

Looks like a good solutions to me, only comment I'd make is that some of those premade cables aren't designed to be cut, stripped back and reterminated, even in screw terminals. Might be a little awkward.

EDIT: SPAG

Oh, is there anything I should look out for or should I stick to the bare end cables?
