Mark M
Ive read through a lot of topics on VGA and composite and have decided that VGA will be the best route as I only have to go about 20m however between floors there is only a small hole cut through the mez floor and a vga plug wont fit through it! Is there anything I can get that has a smaller plug on it that will maintain the quality of the VGA? Or should I speak to someone about getting the hole made bigger? I know you could probably make the cables up yourself but Im hopeless with a soldering iron!! Thanks
tlc
take a look at http://cpc.farnell.com/clever-little-box/v...-20m/dp/AV19624 consists of cable terminated one end only so you can poke cable thru hole this then is connected to a pre terminated wall box with the other vga connector terminal strip connection so no soldering needed

Thankssoldering VGA connectors isn't fun at the best of times. You could use 5way mini coax, crimp BNC's on the end, and then use a breakout like these ones. (These are VDC, hence expensive, but there are cheaper ones knocking about) Just make sure you get the correct sized BNCs for the cable... from experience mini BNC's don't work with normal coax cable... Saying that, as long as its out of the way and discreet, the cheapest/easiest way is just to get a bigger hole!
Mark M
Using the 5 way BNC could be an option but while it would get through the hole it will cost me a lot more in cable. I could get the hole made bigger and then stick something over it Im sure but the other problem which Ive only just remembered is that I had planned on feeding them through a length of scaffold to go from the computer to mez floor for protection. 4 vgas through a piece of scaff? :)
J o n n y
CAT5 could be a good solution. There are so many manufacturers offering these units now, Extron, Kramer, Magenta etc (the latter being my preferred choice) and for a 20m run you could get away with going for the slightly more budget versions of these. True Colours have a decent range.
Mark M
Main problem with that would be cost Jonny, I need at least 4, possibly more, at each end. Think its just going to be much easier to get the drill out!!

Mark M
True, will have to rethink that. Its not essential but thought it would be the easiest way to protect the cables and to maintain the industrial feel. Suppose I could always get a metal strip box made that could store the cables. Nick Mawer
There is another way. You could use the following cables from Kramer Electronics http://www.kramerelectronics.co.uk/product...=748&sf=166 and couple them with this wall plate device: http://www.kramerelectronics.co.uk/product...del.asp?pid=362 Or alternatively - you could convert the signal to CAT 5 and then back again, though the cost would be more than the solution above. Mark M
Thanks Nick, will sit down and consider the costing options and benefits of both routes.
bruce
Buy a pre-made VGA cable. Cut one end off. Pull it through the hole. Terminate the cut end with CPC part number AV18817 - a wall plate with a VGA socket and screw terminals. Cost about 4 pounds.
Mark M
That makes things a lot more afforable!! I pressume providing I get decent cables there should be no major loss in signal quality?
TomHoward
I was going to suggest that there must be a cheaper VGA wallplate from CPC than the clever little box one but I didn't get round to finding one. Re the cable run, I'm no vidiot but we regularly run a projector setup in our venue with a 20m cable to the projector after it's come up through the tie line from the stage - must be a 50m run in total and never given us problems. Whether this is outside the spec I don't know. Edit: Just had a look and those Pro-signal VGA cables are still on offer at CPC as well, 30m for £18.50 down from £33. Order code AV1481661

Might be a little awkward. EDIT: SPAG
