Amplifier and Rig Advice Please?

Hi all,

I have 2 problems with the sound setup that I have at the moment, its easier if I list the equipment and then describe the problems...

2 X NJD Celestion tops (600 watts @ 8 ohms) each cab consisting of 1 x CDX1745 HF and one 15" FTR-154080F LF

2 X Celestion bass bins ( 600 watts @ 8 ohms) each cab having 1 X 15" FTR 15-4080F

1 X Behringer super X pro

1 X Crown XTI 1000 (power tops) 275 watts @ 8 ohms

1 X Cerwin vega 2800 (power bass bins) 600 watts @ 8 ohms.

Problem 1:

Just using the tops without subs and crossover. Why is the Crown (which is less than half the wattage of the speakers) MUCH louder than the Cerwin vega?

When I am running the cerwin vega nearly clipping, the speakers feel they are well matched.

But when I plug the crown in which is half the power, the speakers distort (and its LOUD!) and the amp is no where near clipping.

Is the crown just more efficient?

Problem 2:

When the whole rig is together, input -> X over > Amps > subs + Tops, and the bass bins (cerwin vega amp) are nearly clipping and the tops (crown amp) are well matched in 'loudness' is the rig, NOT very loud.

It is louder when I just use the tops into the crown amp. without the subs

I though that using bins, not only enhances sound quality but increased the SPL.

?

How can I get more sound out of it?

I would be so so so grateful if someone could shed some light on this as I am tearing my hair out here

Kind Regards,

Toby

The Crown is louder because it has more gain. In a tops-only system, 99% of the time this is of no importance.

If the amps have the, make sure that the Bridged and Parallel switches are OFF, that any crossovers are OFF, and that any filters are OFF. Turn any clip limiters ON.

When the Crown starts to distort, is the system louder or less loud than when the CV starts to distort?

What do your mixer's main meters read when each one of the amps starts to distort?

If the system is much quieter when you are using the crossover, either you are not running the crossover at unity gain (Gain/Level knobs at 12:00), the limiters are cutting the volume, or you do not have the crossover set correctly:

Low Cut buttons IN

Xover Freq knobs @ ~100

Xover Freq buttons OUT

Left mode button IN, right mode button OUT

LF Sum button OUT

Low Cut buttons IN

Delay 0 (one never needs to delay the lows)

CD Horn button OUT (even if your tops have CD horns)

Limiter button IN

Threshold knob OFF (clockwise) (at least for starters)

Once this is done, adjust the output level controls to get the subs/tops balance that you want.

Hi mate,

The crossover is running as you stated, gains at 12, xover at 100Hz etc

The amps have clips on and limiters off

It is not the amps that is distorting, its the speakers. but only with the crown.

the speakers distort at -10dB level on the crown db meter. But the CV is clipping and the sound is no where near distortion.

I always try to keep the mixer (max volume) at around 0 dB - 2dB

Hope this helps to answer the questions :S

regards,

Toby

But is the volume of the tops as loud with the crown BEFORE it starts distorting?

Hey Rob!

The volume is possibly as loud, if not louder.

forgetting the aforementioned questions, the bass bins are a pair of Skytec full range cabs, just with the celestion drivers in them. (hard wired for just bass)

I am building some Ply, reflex bins.

Now, I am aware that the celestion driver only has a Sensitivity of around 87dB at 40 - around 120 HZ and thats not very loud :S

But will a good 120L well designed cab make these drivers shine, or are they just crud??

Regards,

Toby
