suds
Hi there I am looking for a new microphone for live performance and hope someone could shed some light for me as I have been searching and there are so many to choose from I dont know where to start to be honest. I have been using the shure sm58 mic for the past few years and it has performed great and it is easy to see why it is so highly regarded it has never let me down and still performs the way it did when I first bought it. But im now looking to buy a wireless microphone something with a slightly warmer maybe richer sound than the 58. The only experience I have is with my 58 and some very cheap models so if anyone could help I would really appreciate it. Big expensive models are out of the question im afraid as my budget is fairly modest. Thanks in advance.
Unfathomable
This might help, it is from when I was looking a month or so ago. Not sure what your budget is, but mine wasn't great. In the end I decided to hire radios when clients specifically want them. where ever possible I stick with wired mics. Dave
jonnyl94
I'd have to reccomend the Senheiser EW135, http://go.discboy.co.uk/209 I've used it for many events, its really good for many purposes, and its not terribly expensive.
paulears
If you like the 58 'sound' then you might find the 835 capsule not quite to your taste. It's quite different sounding. To be honest, it could be a wise move to buy a secondhand Shure as investing in a new radio system at the moment, especially as the prices for the latest new kit that will have the option of a paid re-tune/re-fit when the channels change are quite steep. G3 is a great system, just no longer as good value for money as it's 25% more expensive than the G2. Maybe a Beta 58 system would fit? Again, it sounds different from a 58, but if you go up from a 58 then it seems 58 to beta 58 then the 86/87 heads. The 865 heads for the sennheiser's sound rather nice to my ears, especially for people with strong upper registers.
suds
That sounds interesting paulears my vocals are naturally quite high and strong in the upper register as you said this is why im looking for a microphone system that is going to assist me in achieving a warmer sound with a bit more depth in the vocals which the 58 I have doesnt really do. But the sennheiser you spoke about sounds like it might be right for the job is there a specific you could recommend ive searched on google for the 865 but it comes back with results for quite a few mics. Thanks for your help.
TimmyP1955
I prefer the Sennheiser range to the Shure range. A very accomplished mixperson friend has tried many vocal mics, and the 835 is his go-to for singers with thin voices. He likes the 935 and 945 for "normals". I prefer the Senny 100 to the Shure SLX or ULX The EV 767a is good, and is cheap on eBay ($60 shipped last time I looked). Their new PL80a is getting some good mentions. Dunno about their wireless though. The new X2 wireless seems to be well liked - just make sure you get the new version with the tighter battery connectors (the old ones turn off if the mic gets a good smack). Be aware that unless you spend top dollar (upwards of $2k a pop) a wireless will not sound as good as a wired mic with the same capsule, so go wireless only if it will truly add enough to your show that it gets you more gigs. suds
Thanks Timmyp1955 for your advice thats a brilliant help im thinking of going for the sennheiser 835 after what you said it sounds to be exactly what im looking for. I have had a quick look at the 835 on the internet and have also seen the 845 that sennheiser also do this one is a little more expensive but im just wondering if its worth the extra few quid or not and what the difference might be. Thanks again for the response it was really helpful.
StevieR
The e835 is a cardioid pattern mic and the e845 has a super-cardioid pattern. Sound wise there is not a huge degree of difference. Both of the previous mics are dynamics. If you move up to the e865 that has also been mentioned, this is a condenser microphone and has much improved sensitivity to sound and helps bring out the subtleties of the human voice. This is still one of my favourite microphones at present. Steve
suds
Thanks StevieR had a look at the e865 but unfortunately although it looks a great mic at the moment my budget wont stretch that far so maybe at some point in the future I will move up to that model. I have purchased the e835 and im just waiting for delivery, due to the advice I have been given im really looking forward to getting this mic and it has saved me a bit of cash I picked it up for £69. Thanks again to everyone who has replied to me it has really helped me make a decision that I never thought I was going to be able to make. Cheers guys. johndenim
As StevieR the e835 is very similar to the e865, my wife uses the latter and has tried both, but the condenser gives that bit more presence, and overall quality.
ojc123
Just a note of caution. There are a lot of fake sennheisers out there and they are not a patch on the real thing. I had one and it was a good £20-30 mic but no more than that. It was worth what I paid for it. Take care on Ebay and similar. Give it a good check over to convince yourself it's genuine. The E845s seems to be a favourite for the fakers.
suds
Thanks for the caution ojc123 but I have ordered the mic from a reputable online music store so im pretty sure it will be genuine but thanks again for the advice.
