Abstract VR8 part needed

lowlevel

Recommended Posts

I've recently became owner of two vr8 abstract scanners (regular version, non rotating). One is working perfectlyOther one has display/storage problems.

I isolated the problem to vr display board v1.2, the one with the displays and buttons on it. When I move the 'good' board from the one machine to the other, the other machine works 100% then. So the problem is definitely this pcb. I also tried swapping the chip that is on it (firmware chip?), but the fault wasn't located here.

I checked with abstract themselves but haven't had an answer yet. So in the meantime...If anyone is having this board in working condition (from a broken machine for parts for example) or has it just as a spare, and is willing it to sell to me. I would be very happy. I know these lights don't go for big money these days, but I'm always happy when I'm able to repair some equipment.

I'm located in Belgium, but can pay perfectly through paypal or wire transfer.

Try here

http://www.lteltd.com/djs&lSparesPCBs&...ectingLeads.htm

this company supply all spares for Abstract lighting.

Thank you for the link! I emailed them but they don't have any stock left.

They do offer a repair service, though if anyone on this forum has this part for sale, please let me know. I would prefer buying right away

Here's a pic of the part:

(1) there seems to be very little on that board. If the problem definitely moves with the board and not the chip on the back of it (can you tell us the part number please), then you probably have a short circuit or dry joint etc (apart from the obvious things like bad leds or switches).

(2) Jamie Shurlock may have one - look at www.jamiesmagictorch.co.uk. I'm not sure, but I think he sometimes hangs out here...

update: Collism perhaps has one for me.

As promised the picture from the backside of this pcdb. I believe it is the chip on the left. It's some kind of eprom that holds data (software?). I believe this is the faulty one on the board I have

OK, the big socketted IC on the right is a microcontroller. It does contain some memory but that may not be enough. The small one on the left could well be a serial EEPROM or flash. These do have limited numbers of read/write cycles so it may have gone bad.

Incidentally, the short number on the big chip appears to be 9843 - this is a date code, 43rd week of 1998.

If you tell us the numbers on the other two chips we should be able to tell you what they are.

Have the board not with me right now but looking at the higher res picture I took, it doesn't have any nr's on it.

If the eeprom has gone bad, it will take some work to repair it:

- unsolder the bad one

- get a new one + burn the correct data into it

- solder it back onto the board (in a socket)

Especially the 2nd step is beyond my capabilities so a replacement board would be the better thing.

Had a lead by Colism but get no reply anymore through pm or mail though he is online here...

So if anyone else has this board for sale, please let me know.

I should have one in the warehouse, there 4 vr8's in pieces in a box somewhere. I'll do some routing in the next few days
