source 4 par darkness

My guess is you're not using Phillips HPL lamps. Source 4s don't like any other manufacturer, I'm afraid, and they just don't sit in the ceramic properly. Try changing to Phillips lamps and see if the problem goes away.
Hmm, never had that problem before.. I've had GE, Ushio, Osram/Sylvania (whatever brand of the month my supplier sends me really) and they've all worked fine, but its something to watch out for though, so thanks.

But, my guess would be a fault with the lamp socket.. Possibly the contacts getting corroded for one reason or another or the ceramics cracked and the pin terminals have moved slightly and the tap/touch of the brass knob jolts them back into place..

Easy thing to do is to just have a look to see if there's any residue from arcing or some other 'gunk' or to see if there's any other visible damage to the socket..

That was my initial thought too, although I was uncertain if the OP meant that a particular fixture has this problem, or fixtures at random, in which case it's be rather unlikely that they all had a loose connection, unless they were all damaged in trasportation.

Fair point... Still stand by my comments on personal experience with different lamp brands, but understand people can have different experiences depending on a number of factors. And if the s4s are all of the same age and have had the same number of hours use, IMO its not too hard to believe the lamp sockets could all be suffering from 'aging' and thus explains the intermittent nature of the issue.

Lets see what he says eh.

Certainly we have some Parnels (very similar to an S4 Par) which have played up with GE and Ushio lamps but been no problem at all since going over to just Phillips lamps, and I've heard of others who've had the same problem. Could just be a certain batch, I suppose.

It is more or less all of them. Only last week I thought 3 had gone on one circuit, but when I just began to unscrew the housing they each came back to life again.

I usually use GE lamps, Never have any problems with S4's. Just the pars.

They all look fine on visual inspection. No obvious signs of arcing or corrosion.

Strange.
