HID ballast transformer

I am thinking of shipping 12 moving heads to America, and the 110 voltage is a problem, I can change the 24 volt 10VA transformer no problem, but there is a 240 volt HDI 150 watt ballast, and a power factor correction capacitor.

Does anybody know where I can locate a 110 volt ballast?

and do I have to change the capacitor as well?

I cant answer your question directly, other than a better source for 110V ballasts is the USA rather than 240v-land, but do offer a cautionary note - many venues in the USA require all equipment used to be "listed" (most commonly by UL, but there are several others) and if you change the internals of a piece of equipment it loses its listed status, and then you may not be permitted to plug it in.

Don't they have two-phase 220 volt power supplies in the US?

Yep there is a 115V line to neutral, 230V line to line, I have a few Century Strand Lekos that were buit in/for the US market and are specced for 230V with 230V bulbs when they arrived from the US, funny big plug on them, so maybe they have some 230V outlets as standard in stage rigs.

If not call into your local electrical wholesalers, 110/230 tapped balasts for HID lamps are readily available so should not be a problem, I get all my ballasts from Denmans/Newey & Eyre, they get them from some supplier next day delivery

Can the manufacturer supply a kit? With approvals, so that UL approvals would not be compromised.

Given a 220V two phase you'd get more grief from the 60HZ as the ballasts would be made for a specific frequency.

Jivemaster makes two good points here, there are ballasts rated for 50-60Hz, but you should definently be aware of the frequency difference. I would assume that replacing the ballast with another would not compromise the products listing status, but I think UL actually test examples of all the products that get listed so to what extent this would be considered a design/spec change?

I'm sure that this would be a modification sufficient to void the listing.

You could get these things individually approved after the modification (UL offer such a service; its how you get one-off's like industrial control panels listed) but new movers would probably be cheaper
