Giles Favell
vincy If your deck is a genuine Steeldeck (and not a copy) then as long as you have a good quality 18mm plywood top on it, you shouldn't get any sagging on it - even when people dance. It may be that yours has been re-topped with a cheaper, less strong plywood which flexes more, or it may be that you have a copy deck, such as a maltbury or similar. niclights
Perhaps there is a fracture in the box section cross-members? I've seen this happen and it does then allow the surface to flex.
slim_mcslim
in my experience steeldeck does flex when used as dance platforms, and more worryingly I have seen a piece bent after use in a crowded nightclub... I think ambideck is a better product as it contains two extra cross members and in my opinion is made from a stronger gauge of steel. but you should replace your deck top with 18mm grade 1 finish multi-laminate birch ply which is around £45 a sheet from good timber merchants (not b&q) should be made up of around 13 layers p edit, noticed that you are from india so you may struggle to get finnish birch ply, I don't know what your equivalent would be, but in the UK we can get Far Eastern ply that comes from india and china (this is generally low quality and cheap) and should be avoided if possible. vincybhamra
hi guys thanks for your inputs ..you are right we dont get birch plywood in india..so we use shuttering plywood which is used in building constructions...and also we dont have original steeldeck with us its a copy made by megadeck from australia.. do you think if I replace the deck with 25 mm plywood will it make difference ? regardsvincy
niclights
Almost certainly. But it will be much heavier. If that is a problem I might look at welding two extra cross members? Still adds some weight but not as much as the wood.
WiLL
The sagging would be more down to the cross members than your surface. Unless the surface is less than 18mm thick, if it is less than that then CHANGE IT QUICK! If you are removing the surface then this would be the ideal time to give the crossmembers a good checking over, and indeed maybe welding in one or two more in box-steel to spread the load and support the surface more evenly. If you're not sure about the deck it may be worth giving megadeck a call and getting some specs on the decks weight-bearing capabilites and compare that with what you are expecting it to take. If it's used in a club for instance you have to expect it not only to take the weight of people upon it but also the impact weight of those people jumping up and down on it, which is a LOT more. You could use 25mm and you would see less sagging, however you would be adding MORE weight to the frame which may already be close to it's limit, plus it would a complete b*tch to move around. BTW if you are replacing lots of deck surfaces I would recommend setting up some kind of jig in your workshop area to make sure they go on straight. Will save you time and fuss in the long run. Piers Shepperd
You could use 25mm and you would see less sagging, however you would be adding MORE weight to the frame which may already be close to it's limit. Hi Will - Adding maybe 13kg extra uniform weight (the difference between a 3/4" and 1" deck) should not be getting the deck anywhere near its limit, but agree that your crew will complain (more!) when moving them. Vincy - How many legs does your decking system have - 4 or 6? This will also affect how much deflection you get.The addition of extra cross braces will help, IF it is the plywood which is flexing, and not the whole sub-frame. Piers Shepperd
Vincy, I don't think you will get a definitive answer from an internet forum! We can't see the decks, and we can't see how they are being used. Please either contact the original supplier of the decks, or perhaps try doing the modifications already suggested on one of your decks. Cheers, Piers
