Every Child Matters & Technical Theatre Skills

The Governments Every Child Matters programme aims to give all children the support they need to:

 

* be healthy

* stay safe

* enjoy and achieve

* make a positive contribution

* achieve economic well-being.

 

Do you think your school supports technical theatre skills? How do you think what you do in school theatre fits with the 5 goals of Every Child Matters ?

 

Please do not name schools or teachers.

 

Why ask this question?

 

It is about participation, What is participation?

 

Asking children and young people what works, what doesn't work and what could work better; and involving them in the design, delivery and evaluation of services, on an ongoing basis. The Every Child Matters (ECM): Change for children programme ensures that policies and services are designed around the needs of children and young people; and that they are involved in decisions at a local and national level. Engaging children and young people gives them opportunities to make positive contributions to their communities.

 

Sinclair and Franklin (2000) identified the following reasons for participation, to:

 

* uphold children's rights

* fulfil legal responsibilities

* improve services

* improve decision making

* enhance democratic processes

* promote children's protection

* enhance children's skills

* empower and enhance self-esteem.

 

So on a sort of National Level what do you think about school support for technical theatre skills?

How does ECM and theatre skills relate?

 

ECM is a theme that runs throughout the school and should be reflected in all area's. Its probably not something that transfers to "technical theatre skills" within a school as most schools don't teach that as a core subject, very few schools would teach it as part of an optional curriculum.

I was not thinking of EMC as a subject more how could people relate what they do in a theatre especially if the skills are not part of the core learning activity?

 

Do young people feel they achieve and get credit for what they do and is it transferable?

Healthy? It involves a lot of lifting and walking around to the various school departments therefore keeping us active and physically fit*

 

Safe? As long as staff and students adhere to regulations put in place to keep us safe.

 

Enjoy and Achieve? Yes, seeing a show come together (no matter how big or small) is always rewarding and enjoyable.

 

Positive contribution? Sometimes it feels as if you are being pressured into doing technical for a show as the teachers ask you in such a way that it feels like you are doing wrong to refuse. Most of the time though it feels as if you are doing something that you enjoy but at the same time the gratification from knowing that you are needed is great.

 

Economic Well-being? I'm not quite sure what this means but if it is a fancy way to say "Will it keep me in a job" Then I certainly hope so.

 

Get credit for what we do? Although we can put it on a CV, it seems to me that most employers will ignore all school shows as they believe school shows aren't to the same standard as shows out of school. I have done very good school shows, the same way I have done some very poor Am-Dram Shows.
