admdisco
I was just wondering if anyone knows where I can get a replacement mirror for a Martin 812, The only place I can find is '10 out of 10' but I was hoping for a cheaper alternative (if it exists). All glaziers I've tried only supply mirror down to a thickness of 2mm which is still too thick for my needs. Definitely need to get some flight cases for these to stop me from firing another one across the back of the car. B-) Any ideas appreciated, Thanks in advance
swampman
Try locating a supplier of acrylic plastic (metacrilato in Spanish) plastic with (aluminium) reflective finish: shop fitters/decorators, display case manufacturers...<br />I do not know about heat/fire risks associated with this material, but it sorted out a collection of wobblies I had to repair once and glass was much to heavy and thick. (Edit: slipped letter and word!)
gyro_gearloose
No! Do not use plastic! It will give you two slightly offset images as the light beam will be reflected partially off the front surface of the plastic as well as the actual mirror surface. What you need is 'front-surface' mirror. You may be lucky and find some on ebay, but make sure it isn't just a piece of thin conventional mirror as you will get the 'two-image' effect. Richard CSL
You know you can go to Halfords and buy a replacement car mirror, and get someone to cut it down for you, and use double sided sticky tape (available in B&Q) to fix it as this is easiest to remove should it require replacing again. David A
the cheap small type of mirrors from discount stores are very thin glass and very cheap and work fine for disco type work, or it may be worth buying in a piece of front surface mirror then you can make the as you need. admdisco
Thanks for the help, Did a search for 'front surface mirror' on e-bay, thought I was in luck but all the optical mirror on offer only goes down to a thickness of 3mm, that is still way too thick, looks like im off hunting round the pound shop for a cheap mirror, and then second option is halfords ( B-) knowing their prices though it probably wont be far off buying one from '10 out of 10' :D ) if all that fails looks like it'll be a 'quick fix' for the weekend with some 2mm mirror from the local glazier until I source a replacement. Cheers,
Jivemaster
Car accessory shops sell flat mirror in small pieces for replacement vanity mirrors. They also sell the ultra sticky and ultra strong double sided tape that sticks number plates and replacement mirrors and is the only thing that survives beung flicked around by a stepper motor. admdisco
;) SORTED! :) Spoke to the 'Old Dear' and pinched the mirror she keeps in her handbag, within a few minutes I'd prised it out of the plastic (did break the corner off but its still more than big enough) and its exactly the same thickness as the mirrors on the other 812's, Now just to see the look on the local glaziers face when I turn up with this small piece of half broken mirror and a template :) Cheers for the idea, I'll put up with any 'ghosting' that may arrise from not using propper 'front-surface' mirror, sure the people down the pub wont notice after a few beers (if at all!) :P Thanks for the Help

KevinE
The proper glass is known as 'surface-silvered'. I've also used make-up mirrors (which are rear silvered) for old disco effects and they work well enough; though I use the proper thing where available; and if the fixture justifies the cost.
