paulears
If you're serious about being a cameraman, then The Guild of Television Cameramen have a lot of benefits for members. As a non-member you get access to a bit of the website. As for books Millerson G — Video Production Handbook (Focal Press, 1992) Croton G — From Script to Screen (BBC Training Manuals, 1986)Evans R — Practical DV Film Making (Focal Press, 2002)Hardy P — Filming on a Microbudget (Pocket Essentials, 2004)Jones C and Joliffe G — The Guerrilla Film Makers Handbook (Continuum, 2000)Kindem G and Musburger R — Introduction to Media Production: From Analog toDigital, 2nd Edition (Focal Press, 2001)Millerson G — Video Production Handbook (Focal Press, 1992) The Millerson Book is pretty useful, but a bit old - however, virtually everything is 'convertable' to current - with the exception of things like HD and widescreen. If you want a really good, but old book - then The Technique of the Television Cameraman, by Peter Jones was what I started with in the 70s, and although it's been out of print for years, they sometimes appear in second hand ads - do a google. The reason for picking this one is that it's an old style - BBC-ish manual that is now pretty historic in equipment terms, but he details lens data and calculations, and proper framing and operational technique, and as a result, give good basic grounding that is still important today. The copy I have says something about "Engineers believe that colour television may be a reality soon........" Good stuff.
Maddison
Hi there,Could you recommend me a camera operating training course in London? Even a good book could help.Thank you for your help in adavance! Frank BBC offer lots of training courses, at their training site at Wood Norton. If you can compromise on the London element, BBC training is, in my experience, excellent, and seems to be well regarded. Something like this might be helpful for studio work or if you are doing PSC stuff this could suit.
scjb
It might be worth giving Ravensbourne College a quick call to see if they are doing any relevant summer courses. Contact details at http://www.rave.ac.uk
p.k.roberts
Could you recommend me a camera operating training course in London? If it's only the smaller cameras you are using, then you might also want to have a look at this; http://www.bbctraining.com/courseDetails.a...=6117&cat=

Bobbsy
+1 for Ravensbourne College. In the past I've employed a number of people who did the full courses there and it was obvious they'd been given good training. I've had a quick look at the "short course" section on their web site and they have a number of camera operator courses listed, both for single camera working and studio multi-camera stuff. peternewman
I've spoken to a few guys who went on one of the BBC camera ones, the PSC I guess, and I think they found it useful from what they said. We also did a studio exercise in the main studio onsite as part of our engineering training, which was good to get used to the operators point of view, and to use a ped for the first time, there seemed to be a lot of people doing live music camerawork when I was up there on previous occasions, T&D also run Steadicam courses if you want to progress further down that route. If you do go down the Wood Norton/Evesham route, drop me a PM and I can probably offer some helpful comments on accommodation etc having spent far, far too long up there over the last few years. stevefez
Another +1 for Ravensbourne. Thats where I did my degree, and the camera operations course running at the same time looked great. If it was anything like my course, most of the 'hands on' teaching was by current, or ex, professionals who have worked in the industry for some time. Nick S
The National Film and Television School (Beaconsfield, commutable from London) also run some short-courses - they tend to be a bit more specialist, looking over their current list they have a 5 day Steadicam course, one on observational filming, and a 16/35mm class (their site is down at the moment, but google them in a few days and it will hopefully be back up). They are not cheap, but they do offer substantial discounts for freelancers.

peternewman
Stay in the Evesham Hotel... Surely thats all there is to say...Yes pretty much, although I know a few people who've stayed in the Broadway. Anyway feel free to get in touch if you go down the Wood Norton route Frank, I can probably offer some general advice about going for training courses up there.
