Chamsys.... and windows CE. Is this possible in any way? I bought a Windows CE tablet to use as a Chamsys remote but I cannot get Magic Q onto the tablet. Any other ways of achieving this?

For what its worth the tablet is a DT Research 366. DT 366

Thanks for all your help.

Can you get XP installed on there instead ? The manual seems to imply that it works, failing that you could run a VNC client on Win CE connecting the actual machine running Chamsys.

I'm guessing you mean the "MagicQ PC Remote" software version of MagicQ that comes under the "MagicQ Remote Control" item in the start menu... not the web interface? Or something else?

And can you also define "cannot get magicQ onto the tablet"? Does it fail during installation?

I dread to think how slow a virtual machine will run on a (AMD) Geode CPU....

All listed hardware seems to be fully supported by linux, so if you have "full access" to the tablet (ie. you can change the installed system) I would suggest you either upgrade to Linux or Win XP(e).

Other than that as pointed out above remote functionality may not* work if you don't have Chamsys hardware and this tablet has a resolution that is far below the 1024x768 recommended for the application.

Also note that on a 12,1" 1280x800 screen working in "touch" mode the buttons are borderline for me and I have fairly thin fingers....

* Browser remote is only unlocked for people with Chamsys hardware, however they have been recently working on remote were to chamsys apps talk to each other and stay synced that might work I don't know....

Ultimately, I have had success remote controlling Magic Q through the multi-windows application. However, this is installed with Magic Q itself and Magic Q is not supported on Windows CE. As a test I remote desktop'ed from the tablet to an xp machine running multi-windows connected to a separate chamsys computer. This worked. So my options are either updgrade the tablet to XP (appears to be fairly difficult) or by Chamsys hardware to enable web server (way out of price range.)

Why can't Chamsys sell a dongle to unlock the software (or even a student edition)??

Although I feel Magic Q is more than worth it, a $1000 node is simply more money than I have available. =[

Back to the topic, thank you all for your help as usual.

They need to make their money somewhere, and you get a very powerful app even without their hardware so complaining you don't have everything is I think fairly misplaced, how many manufacturers give 18 universes of DMX for free?

Upgrade to XP or to Linux (which is cheaper :)) and you can do the multiwindow work around...

Don't get me wrong... I didn't mean to sound whiny... I am very grateful for Chamsys and the software they provide. I was simply saying that they could sell a license for those that wished to unlock it but could not afford the hardware. Then they still make money =]. But either way as soon as I can afford it I will be buying the hardware. Chamsys is by far the best lighting solution there is and ultimately I hope to purchase one of their consoles.

I was under the impression that only the first universe was available in the demo mode. Is this no longer true?

Only the first universe will output on third party dongles (enttec opendmx, velleman stuff etc...). All universes will output artnet / ACN without requiring hardware as far as I know.

You could just treat the dual DMX output as a licence dongle with the added bonus of having two DMX outputs as well! Not sure how much they sell for over in that part of the world, but I'm surprised that it would be as much as $1000.

Even cheaper the Chamsys two universe USB-DMX interface is only £400 (approx. $650) so not an unreasonable amount of money considering how powerful the software is. However worth noting that the in-built webserver only provides basic remote control for focusing/testing, it doesn't provide full control of the console.

I think that the pound prices are very unlikely to reflect the price wherever he is as importers in various countries seem to be taking solid margins...

If you need a full remote desk doing the multiwindow (master/slave) setup is probably the best, if you are just after a focusing remote get the hardware to unlock the webinterface and use any device that features a browser and WiFi (smartphone, iPod touch etc.)

Aaron,

What is the exact issue you are having with installing it on the tablet? Does it come up with an error message or just fail completely during installation? Windows CE is somewhat unchartered territory for us so if you could drop me an email - matt@chamsys.co.uk - then we could see if we can help you out.

Best regards,

Unfortunately over here (US) the basic fader board is in the range of $1,499 and the dongle about $1,099. I'm very surprised to hear that there is such a significant price difference. Who knows... maybe the direct Chamsys distributor here (PRG) might have better rates.

(P.S. Congo Jr. crashed again during a major lease tonight.... maybe I can convince my theater to get a MQ-100!)

Regards,

Aaron
