Media servers

In the current beta versions of MagicQ, there is support added for the playback of video files via the MagicQ Media Centre and the LED mapping built into the software. At the moment, this is intended to be purely for LED/fixture mapping (from personal experience it does look great on a bunch of the Showtec Active Sunstrips!) not for use as a media server.

You mention that this would need upgraded hardware, and this is one the reasons why we don't intend to build a media server into the software. MagicQ PC is compiled from the same source code as the software that runs on the consoles. To add functionality into MagicQ PC that requires top spec hardware means that we would have to upgrade the hardware in the consoles, pushing up the price because of more, and more expensive parts as well as a longer build time.

We can interface to any media server which will accept Art-Net/DMX input, and using the MIDI/Timecode Interface you can also control those with a MIDI input. There are a number of media servers we support further in the Media window, giving you thumbnails, layer previews and live previews.

My personal recommendation for a good, low cost media server is ArKaos, either the VJ or MediaMaster software, depending on how much you want to spend. Both are fully supported in MagicQ thanks to the MSEx (Media Server Extention) protocol, and you can't beat the features compared to the price.

Chamsys let you use their Magicq PC software dongle free and is the same as the console program.

I use it with a cheap touchscreen laptop I picked from ebay to control green hippo media servers.

You can download magicQ PC software at www.chamsys.co.uk.

Very nice helpful guys and when you get flush you can by a pc wing or mini wing which are not too pricey.

They have personalities for most media servers and and a helluva lot of lx fixtures.

Green hippo are now also doing smaller servers such as the critter and hippoportamus so if you dont need 8 layers and full hd you can get started at a much lower price.

I am a big fan of Green Hippo and the support guys are great.

Cheers,

Ian
