Media servers

If you're just wanting it to play about with then there is a free trial of Resolume. I haven't used it since version 2 but the only limitation then was that it displayed "Resolume" on the output screen every now and again. Its controllable with both midi and DMX. Might give the new version a try now...

Does anyone know of any free media server programs, particularly if they can talk to magicQ somehow? (I know MagicQ now has built in video mapping to led's, but I don't think it can be used to send video to an external display)

I'm interested more to have a fiddle and see how it works than for show usage, do any of the hardware servers (Catalyst, Hippo, Coolux, etc) do a limited software version for example?

Catalyst is free to download and play with, it should work with artnet it will just spoil the output with big blue lines and flash red to stop you using for it without paying for it!

That sounds perfect, it's how the interface works with MagicQ I'm interested in, so this should do the trick. (had a quick look on HES site but can't find a link to download the demo)

A concurrent post has been automatically merged from this point on.

I'm not sure if this is what you're after but VisualJockey Gold is definatly worth a look and FREE! <_<

That looks interesting, any idea how to interface that with MagicQ? (Artnet, DMX or MIDI?)

I think you can control it with MIDI but nothing else. Why don't you download it and have a play? It's the best way to find out! <_<

Thanks I will. I've never played with using MIDI control before so it should prove an interesting project.

Just a quick update. I haven't tried connecting to MagicQ yet but I have manged to play with Resolume & VisualJockey.

VisualJockey has some incredible effects, but it is extremely flaky and appears to no longer be supported. (although it is free)

Resolume is much slicker, so far it has been rock solid stable and it is cheap for this type of software. The 3d effects are not as varied as VJ but they are still excellent and the interface is far slicker, if it interfaces well with MagicQ I may end up having to buy myself a copy.

I still haven't found a download source for the Catalyst demo, I'd also be interested in seeing a demo copy of the Coolux Media Player but again I can't find a download for the demo (if it even exists).

Does anyone have experience with using any of these with MagicQ?

Just a thought,

I own a Hippotizer HD and if you want to come down to our warehouse in London and have a play for a day or 2, you are more than welcome to.

HTH,

Dunc @ DCLX

Thanks for the kind offer, I'm midlands based so it's a bit of a trek but I may take you up on that if I'm down your way with some free time.

Can anyone confirm whether any of the above can be controlled via ArtNet/DMX? I've had a quick look at Resolume & VisualJockey and can't seem to find any ArtNet/DMX options.

I'm looking to set-up my current PC as a dedicated server and trigger content using Chamsys via ArtNet over CAT-5.

Any help would be most apreciated.

Adam.

Having just started to play with MagicQ on a PC I have been wondering about media servers too, and especially the interface with MagicQ. In its most basic form, a media server is just a computer that stores and streams video files, yes?

In which case would it not be possible to do this internally with MagicQ PC? Store clips on the same machine as is running the lighting control, and link the media button to this. Its got to be doable. If ChamSys made this possible and at a reasonable cost (I wouldnt expect that to be a freebie too) I think that it woukd be a huge success. It would up the system requirements on the host PC a bit - you'd need fast drives, dual core, gigbit comms etc but it would be great wouldn't it?

You can already do this in MagicQ (in the beta version at least). It now has it's own Media player which can be controlled to play video files directly from Magic Q. It's intended for driving LED displays, but it may be possible to send the video out as well. (I haven't got around to playing with it yet but it sounds promising)
