100V volume control & switching

Hi

2 questions

1) I have seen 100v volume control units available in 24w, 36w & 50w. What does the w figure mean exactly?

2) Which control unit would you reccommend for switching on/off different zones of 100v speakers?

Thanks

In 100V systems, the transformer taps are labelled with a Wattage rating - so that the individual loudspeaker can have it's level properly set, as a reduction from it's maximum. So in in-line volume controls, they use the same system - the spec sheet is needed to make totally sure, but I suspect this one is a control rated at a maximum of 50W, with two lower level settings available. On the other hand, as it's not quite clear, you might mean there are three different controls available - in which case the figures are the power handling maximum, in Watts.

Paul's right when he says that the w stands for Watts, you would choose the right rated volume control for the total wattage of the speakers you are going to control the volume of, for example if you had 4 x 6w speakers that you wanted to control the volume of together (say in one room or zone) then you would choose a 24w rated volume control.

Hopefully that makes sense?

Many different amplifiers have built in controls for turning on or off zones, or you could assign an amplifier to a zone and use a zone mixer? There are many different ways of doing this, it all depends on whether you want the same signal to go to all the zones or wish to have different outputs in each zone?

PM me if you need further information!

Please don't! If they're relevant, post your questions and answers on the forum, and let others see them. That way we share the knowledge, and it means that several people may benefit from it rather than just one. That's what web forums are all about!

Sorry! Note to self....must post here to help all!

Thanks for confirming that.

Now the question is the maximum I have seen are 100w rotary controls for 100v speakers. What if you need to control more speakers?

The amp doesn't have zone controls as it's a 100v amp and I think it just has one output. It's an inter-m 9348.

If you need a 100W control pot then you are using the wrong solution. You probably need either a more flexible amplifier or more amplifers.

I've also not seen volume controls about 100w, therefore you'd need a separate amplifier to control the speakers in the zone your are after, it's not an ideal solution but may be the only one! Either that or split it down into 2 zones of 100w or less in your design?

what you really needed was an inter-m PAM 480 :)

For 100v Line solutions either have a look in the trusty CPC catalogue (www.cpc.co.uk) or contact the company I get all of my 100v Line gear from: R.W.Salt (www.rwsalt.co.uk)
