wil_hob Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 I often find MCs tend to cup both hands around the mesh of SM58s bottoming out the mic and driving the vocal deep into the compessor giving little dynamics to the vocal. has anyone got any advice (other that the mute button an axe or a baseball bat) for getting clear vocals from MCs with poor microphone technique? (I've wondered about using a kick drum mic like a D112)
david.elsbury Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 When you say "MC's" do you mean comperes, as in hosts of a show, or do you mean "emcees" as in rappers and hiphop? Subtle difference between the two
Kevin Ross Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 A common problem I run into so I feel your pain, you can try to make things better by using the side chain on your compressor to make it ignore some of the LF and/or being the highpass fliter up a bit. But if you wanted to buy a new mic may I recommend the Audix Fireball http://www.audixusa.com/docs/products/FireBall_V.shtml I did a few shows with a beatbox artist who changed from using a SM58 to one of these and the difference is night and day.
Bobbsy Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Plus 1 for the Audix Fireball. I did a theatre show once where a guy did a "beatbox" routine and, for that, it was amazing. I must have tried every other mic in my kit before somebody suggested the Audix! However, keep the SM58. They're tough as nails and very useful for bashing the errant emcee over the head! Bob
wil_hob Posted April 24, 2009 Author Posted April 24, 2009 chears guys, I'm a plus 1 for audix I always keep a couple of 0M5s and OM7s in my mic case and I,ve found their drum mics indestructable. I'll see if I can get a demo or borrow the mic you've recomeded. thanks W.
wilkee Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 The trouble is most of them want and expect to use SM58's. I do the sound for a lot of extreme metal bands and I have exactly the same problem. I have now learned to live with it, If that is the sound they want, cacky as it is so be it. Tony
Paul J Need Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 Electrovoice N/D 267 And knocks the socks off a 58 Failing that - go for the baseball bat !!
Kinell Posted April 26, 2009 Posted April 26, 2009 I like to put distortion in their monitors until I get a clean signal from them, 2 gigs later they seem to learn that I can add the bass that they want from FOH. Crude but effective. I'll look into those mics when next buying though.
showman Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Last MC (rap variety) I had I gave them a SM57. It really worked as they didn't have anywhere to cup their hands - it took a bit of persuasion/discussion/banter but we got there in the end. The group's manager was impressed as they "hadn't ever heard the rap clearly"... Just a thought. <Off to go find an Audix Fireball :P >
