Stu
There were Martin's answer to the Goldenscan 3 I think... Yup they are massive, but then again so are the Goldenscans, and that never stopped them doing well! Stu
Ian Ferguson
Are there times when all you need is a moving profile and you end up having to rig a moving light or scanner to achieve it?
smeggie
done that, try to avoid it as the focus blurs as the point of focus changes dramatically as it is moved across the stage in large distances. though the miniscan hpe does a surprisingly good job as a moving profile - has hot, cold, diffuse and colours all usable at same time. along with a blue and white gobo that can [with a green gel and prism, in a pinch] pass for a fair leaf breakup. :D
730 doors
I've recently discovered the sgm giotto series of moving head fixtures. from what I saw of them they wipe the floor with the mac 5/600s giotto specs
MartinT
Never really found Vari*lights and their smart repeaters any problem simply plug in the DMX and the socca from the ballasts to the smart repeater and then one little cable from the smart repeater to the light. That's why a VL6 weighs in at 10Kg as opposed to the M500 32Kg The VL also whips around as opposed to the Mac's sloth like characteristics Cant' speak for the Mac 550 I know that it's picked up a zoom to make it competitive (with a 475w lamp what's that about?) Used Robe and VL they're kicking but always come back to Macs (500 & 600) why? Easy I can hire them for £75 per week per fixture (although VL 2000 are only £90) The main reason I use Macs is that I can easily get them. HIre companied heavily invested. I'd love to use Robes but I just can't get them Not a total Mac hater I love the 2000 profile - at £160 per week for a fixture coting £10 - 12K it's a steal although waiting to get my sweaty paws on a VL 3000 - just need to find one at the right price
mac500
The optics have probably improved in the 550 so you achieve greater output from the lamp.
Stu
IMHO I think VL6s and 5s beat Mac 500 and 600s hands down, both in performance (I.e speed) and weight issues. Hey you have to rig a few more cables for the VL5/6s but I think it's worth it personally. I'd rather pay the extra few quid for a better rig...
