Static Lighting Assistance....

Hi,

I have just received 4 static 'moonflower' style abstract lights from someone, they were a bit battered, but I have managed to recondition them. All the lamps work, though they dont seem that bright as they are only 50watt 12v lamps attatched to flash rated transformers. I have cleaned all the inverted mirror dishes inside and cleaned the lenses, replaced some cabling and all is good, but just not that bright compared to some of my lighting. Question is would I be able to 'up' the lamp wattage to lets say 100watt lamps each? An extra 50watts would make all the difference. I plan on connecting the lights to a stand chaser so that they flash, would make a good cheap effect!

What do you think?

Do-able?

Cheers!

Impossible to say - what exactly are the fixtures?

Have you searched for a user manual? That should indicate what lamp options you have...

These lights dont say anything on the casing or bracket other than 'abstract', there is no name for these 'abstract' lights. Ive guessed just about every name possible for this sort of light with the name 'abstract' at the beginning on a search in yahoo, and nothing comes up just the new 'avr abstract' web page!

God these lights must be old!

Lights in question are 'Abstract' branded, static 1 colour mirror dish inside (not a scanner type or motorised), static lamp, and transformer, all cased in a small and very heavy metal casing with mounting bracket! Simple static moon flower lamps!

they could be scatterspots

or twister 1's!!

either way, 50w is the lamp they require, they wont get any brighter

they are probably 15+ years old and were a cheap effect back then!!

in effect, dont bother

you can buy 100w versions of the moonflowers for about £25 off ebay NEW (think vasto or similar)

or switch to LED and get a Acme Supernova pack (much brighter than 100w), 4 LED effects which produce the same effect as these, 2 white 2 colour, they include a hand controller, 3 x DMX leads, G Clamps and bag, all 4 for £160.

Yes you can modify these lights, you will have to get a 100w switch mode power supply, these are readily available at lighting suppliers and of course the 100w lamp, just watch that heat build up does not become a problem. if the unit has a built in fan it should be ok. perhaps move the lamp back from the lenses or color wheels as the 100w will run hotter than the 50w lamp.

try it out, and let us know how it works out.

you can also get a simular lamp of 250w but its 24v.
