SELECON_R&D Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 Hello All, I’m starting to realize what a valuable resource this forum is after looking over all of your threads. I’m currently in the preliminary stages of redesigning the Selecon Aurora Cyc, Flood, Ground row luminaries which are now getting to the to the stage where a revamp would be beneficial. Selecon have already had various meetings with lighting professionals to try and gauge the success of the existing Aurora product in comparison to competitors lights etc. I would now like to expand on this by giving you the opportunity to tell us what you like/dislike/want in our cyc products and also how it compares to competitors products. In your opinion what is the best Cyc light around and why? Do you have any Issues with: PerformanceQualitySize WeightConfigurationsLookFunctionalityMaintenance issuesWiring issuesRelampingColour framesAdditional accessoriesEtc etc If you have ever said “wouldn’t it be good if ……” this is the time to tell us. All and every comment will appreciated as we realise that you are the guys who are really in the know regarding the functionality of theatrical luminaries and ultimately have a large influence in the purchasing of any products. We are a design led company, so by you giving us feedback now I hope you will see the benefits in future products. Thanks for your time. Duncan Dore
jonathanhill Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I used to be a fan of the Thomas floods mainly the 1000/4's because of the multipole connector that they come fitted with and that the yoke is complete, unlike Coda/Nocturne. The colour frames are a complete pain, I agree, but can be easily solved by customising the units. Strips of super velcro, riveted to the metalwork that the colour frames slot in to, top and bottom sorts that out. Then put the opposite type of velcro on the larger cut colour and all is good. Especially for those interval colour changes - its mainly a dance thing. I say used, because that was when I was in a venue. Thomas floods don't tour. At all. They fall apart. Admittedly they are 'put' on top of the meattracks with all the other crap but they seem to vomit set screws and the glass/mesh nonsense departs company from the unit. I haven't toured with any other units, so cannot really comment. Codas/Nocturnes could be good if retro-fitted with Soca/Leci but there is still the issue that the side plates of the case are die-cast and therefore will break.
son of lx dad Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 For me some sort of "double colour frame" would be good. A device that a piece of heat shield could be in one frame then a spacer then another frame for your dark cyc colour. This would keep that all important gap that makes heat shield useful with 181 on a long show run.
gareth Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Jonathan's comments about cabling are good ones. One thing which would endear you to users of your cyc floods would be a sensible and easily-manageable cabling arrangement - multipole connectors in and out of each unit, with tails and link cables supplied as per purchaser's requirements. The cabling on a flood bar with more than a handful of units on it has the potential to turn into a complete dogs' breakfast when working with units with individual connectors for each cell - multicores just make life so much easier. And a small point - what about trying to come up with a design which will take the same 245mm square cut of colour as a parcan? That's a size that pretty much any theatre will hold cut stock of anyway, and the fewer different sizes of colour one has to find space for, the easier it is. We have Iris, Coda and Pallas cyc floods in our stock - all of them take a different size of colour, and none of them are the same as any of the other sizes that we use!
Oovis Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I'm not familiar with your units and can't see a mention of this on the website; I'd like an obviously unpainted section of the shell for an earth connection when PAT testing so I don't have to file off some paint :** laughs out loud **:
