mbthegreat Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 Installing an art project in a foyer... Involves 80 domestic 40w bulbs that need to be strung around the walls. Looking to source some lampholders, of the type with two pins which penetrate the insulation of a two core wire, and draw power from it without the need to for screwdrivers and hassel. If anyone knows the proper name for this sort of holder it would be very useful, as my googling thus far has proved a little useless. Ta
Barney Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 Sounds like a festoon to meLike a festoon, but with lampholders that you can fix at any point on a T+E cable. I think you mean these, from CEF or Cromwell Plastics. The latter link has a nice little picture demonstrating the construction and pins that pierce the insulation, and there is also a larger picture. I think you would have to discard the T+E cable after use, if you were to remove the holders - as the conductors would be exposed, making it unsafe. The lampholders would be reuseable on a new length of cable, though. HTHBarney
smalljoshua Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 You'll also need the festoon cable. Well, I did the last time I made a festoon. Josh
mbthegreat Posted April 8, 2009 Author Posted April 8, 2009 Yeah, thanks for the help, though I managed to track down Cromwell before you got in there Barney. CEF don't do them off the shelf, so unfortunately I'm left waiting until Thursday for the buggers...

There is a strong possibility that of one of the pins will bridge the earth conductor when assembling. Only use the correct rubber sheathed festoon cable.
KevinE Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 Agree with that, the festoon cable is like the old fashioned TRS in my parents' house....7/02.something or other.

No it's not. 7/029 was the imperial equivalent of modern metric 2.5mm2 cable, only had 7 strands in each conductor and was an installation cable. Festoon cable for lighting is oval in cross section but that's where the similarity ends. It is a flexible twin conductor cable and each conductor usually comprises 45 strands of 0.25mm diameter tinned copper. However, there is no earth conductor. Mods, please close this thread as there is too much misinformation being posted.
