Hi,

We would like to replace our Soundcraft Spirit Folio Mixer as listed below, I have found the Soundcraft EFX12 would this be a good replacement or what would you recommend it is for a high school on a fairly tight budget.

Soundcraft Spirit Folio

Soundcraft EFX12

Thanks Matt

We Ve installed serveral of these mixers in the past ..

Kids seem to like them and are easy to use... Plus they are built like a mercedes ** laughs out loud ** :)

Hey Matt,

If you have a search around you'll find a fair number of topics on small desks and the like that might be of use :)

The soundcraft M series are solid, nice desks but I seem to remember I wasn't taken by its EQ. They're also relatively expensive as pointed out. The EFX12 is a nice desk as well, the faders are smaller and it doesn't feel as solid as the M series (though I've always taken care of said desks in use so can't comment on how they stand up to abuse!)

That said, I'm sure people would be able to offer more specific advise if you were more specific in what you were after. What's the desk planning to be used for, what is the rough budget, are there any number of auxs you'd need, is sound quality of paramount importance - etc. It all helps!

The yamaha MG range is pretty cheap and robust as another alternative. Don't use the built in compression though, it's useless!

I own a Yamaha MG16. Nice little desk and the built in effects arn't bad either.

As I've posted elsewhere, the MG166 range can come with built in effects, but the slightly bigger 206 range doesn't have that option. In either case, don't bother with the -USB option, as it adds a lot to the cost, but no more to the functionality than a cheap USB interface would do.

I own a Spirit Folio and I absolutely love it. Its so simple to use and built like a tank!

One problem is the faders are very smooth, this isn't as such bad it's just they are very easy to knock.

Sorry just read the post again my post is pretty irrelevant!!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your replies the desk is to be used in our Drama Theatre, we currently have 2 CD players, 1 Mini Disk Player and a Cassette Recorder/Player attached to our current desk. We are looking for a 12 Channel desk to help us expand the number of microphones available. we have 2 Sennheiser ew100 Head Mics (looking to upgrade soon) and 8 mic points on stage. the other to XLR points are used for a PC. the Desk will be used for Assembleys, XFactor Competitons, Drama Musicals and Plays and for Laptops and DVD Players.

We are after the upgrade because our soundcraft Spirit Folio is on its last legs and is not worth repairing as we would like more channels and built in effects. I am not sure of the Budget at the momment but around the £400 mark is the max I would think. The desk will be run in mono With the Left driving the front speakers and the Right Driving the back speakers.

I have looked at the Yamaha MG16/6FX

but I think it might be a little complicated for our first years.

We are currently looking at the Soundcraft EFX12 and the MFX12.

We are also considering a Behringer but I have heard they are not worth the money.

What do you think/recommend?

Thanks

Stupid question, but why not have the left driving the left speakers and the right driving the right speakers?

As for the above desk being too complicated for first years, I don't see why a bit of training wouldn't sort that out - we're not talking XL8 complication / size here!

I've never been a big fan of Behringer desks, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that they're not worth the money - the opposite in fact, they give you quite a lot for your money! They are cheap, and if a desk is going to get abused anyway the cheaper option might be worth it. The sound quality obviously isn't the best around, but I doubt that'd be too much of a drawback in a school setting.

One other point though with regards to the number of channels, you say you're upgrading because you need more of them - are you sure 12 will be enough? If you think that 12 might run tight or the answer is "yes, just" then I'd seriously consider looking at a 16 channel desk, yes it's more but it's really worth going for the extra channels in the long run than upgrading and finding you're still a bit short.
