Bradders Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Hi everyone. Just wondering what people think of coaxial monitor wedges. Do they perform, or do they lack grunt with comp and woofer being conjoined?I'm of the opinion it should be pretty cool for vocals firing out from one source, also easier for feedback/mic positioning? I'm looking at getting some FBT verve 12m's, which are B&C loaded. And B&C don't make crap speakers. But any thoughts would be appreciated. Laters
6th Order Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 I've always enjoyed the sound of co-axial designs on monitors. It seems to be a benefit in getting a good sound at a short distance. From the boxes I've used, it's worth mentioning that the nominal dispersion was always conical, rather than asymetrical (as most other boxes are). Obviously this is quite a subjective topic, describing sound that is, but though I've not heard the boxes you're looking at, I'd recommend the idea. As always, what do your ears tell you?
Dan Appleby Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 There are some really good coaxial monitor boxes out there - the d&b max 12 and 15 are to name but a couple... also some of the newer e series boxes are also coaxial I believe.
Rob_Beech Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 There's certainly something to be said for them. The boxes Dan mentions are of course excellent boxes, ones I'm happy to mix or listen to, however it's not a new concept. The old Martin CXW driven properly can really do the trick on even the loudest stages in pairs. And that's a design older than me. There are advantages to them, conical dispersion, you know where you stand with them. There are disadvantages, that dispersion can hit mic stands a bit easier if not placed right. And of course, you may place them perfectly, but the singer knows best doesn't he. Rob
mostlyharmless Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 The D&B ones are all B&C loaded as well. I've used a few conical wedges, and other cabs. Theres advantages and disadvantages to them, but then speakers are always all about engineering comprises and theres some people getting good results with the co-axial setup.
