crox Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 after 8 weeks of not seeing very well in the cinema, about time we bought a rack light. I have done a search and the general concensus is that a samson powerbrite is a good option, but I guess that I am looking to spend a little less for the meantime. I am imagining that one with a double goose neck is a good budget bet? Any recommendations?
Pyramid Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 HiI guess you know that the samson powerbrite is not just a rack light, it is a power conditioner/distribution unit too... Recommendations would be specific to the use, if you are needing to light a short rack only a fixed lamp type would be fine, if however you need light at the bottom of a tall rack goosenecks are the way to go, although have just spoted this rather mad fixed lamp from Adam Hall in SS that claims to light up to 20U! http://www.studiospares.com/Rack-Lighting/...ite/invt/403400 If you just want a lamp I would say that brands don't matter, the fragile things are the bulbs, if they are incandescants, so may be worth looking at LED types if the case is liable to get thrown about. FullRange Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 I'm a fan of this one from Adam Hall. It has two gooseneck LED based lights, is dimmable and can be switched between blue and white. The white is very bright when it's full on, I'm glad it's dimmable! I got mine for about £40. For best value it's hard to beat this one from Thomann. Only a single gooseneck, standard lamp and not dimmable but it does exactly what it says on the tin and is robust.
crox Posted March 22, 2009 Author Posted March 22, 2009 the Adam Hall one looks more interesting. The Samson would be good, but we have anything running of one IEC which a couple of 4 gangs run out from. How far down the rack would the Samson lights throw? I would need to cover at least 10U.
mervaka Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I have a phonic conditioner with lights. it's just a conditioner now as the lights didn't last two minutes, and cant find replacement bulbs too easily. Also, I'm quite alarmed at Bobbsy's previous comments regarding his observations of the quality of phonic's power wiring..
Bobbsy Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Just for clarity, my previous comments about the Phonic wiring quality referred to one specific mixer I repaired for a friend (one of the Helix range to be precise). I've never used their power conditioner. ...however, based on that one mixer I wouldn't touch their power conditioners. Bob
mervaka Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 it's a bit like Pandora's box for me. until I open it, I won't know for definite the state either way. but it works for now, so I'm not going to open it out of curiosity, I'd hate to see some dodgy wiring with someone's death clock attached to it!
Doug Siddons Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 FWIW I bought a gooseneck lamp with a clip from homebase for a £5 pain to transport but good cheap alternative if, as you said, yours is a fixed installation in a cinema?
Chappie Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 For best value it's hard to beat this one from Thomann. Only a single gooseneck, standard lamp and not dimmable but it does exactly what it says on the tin and is robust.I might have a look at that one. I have been after a cheap rack-light model that doesn't need a wall-wart for some time now. Shame you can't dim it though.
crox Posted March 23, 2009 Author Posted March 23, 2009 we are in the cinema every week but the equipment is setup and packed down each week too. Whilst a simple clip light would work "quite" well, it is another thing to set-up, whereas I want something easy and that just come as part of the rack. I think the Adam Hall one looks good, I was looking at some at bluearran as I need to get a collection of cables from there, (unless someone can recommend a cheaper source for van damme cables) but they only do a non-branded one which doesn't look as solid as the AH one. It is really whether I feel that I can stretch to the powerbrite and make the most of the conditioner as well, or stick with a couple of gooseneck lamps. My only concern with the powerbrite is that will the lights cover 10U worth of equipment!
berry120 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 For what it's worth, we've got a couple of the phonic's that are doing fine - they seem to work nicely in terms of power and lighting and no problems or grumbles yet. But no, I haven't checked the internals...
Callanan Systems Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 The Phonic ones are good for the money, ive used one in a 12u rack with no problems.Ive also got a Furman with dimable led's, the quality is a big step up from the phonic but of course it costs more..
