Hi Guys,

I really hope you can help with this one. The Local amdram group im with are doing the above title and we have managed to get most of the props sorted but we have one that is causing some prolems.

Those of you that know the story will know the scene just after granny has been bitten by the vampires, she focusses her mind on an iron anvil (blacksmith jobby) and then to highlight the effect the anvil begins to glow. So there we are we need an anvil that come on looking like a normal anvil and then can on command/cue start to glow.

Any and all ideas that people have are msot welcome. Someone at the club mentioned making something out of perspex and using paint effects to allow a light source to shine through. Anyways as you can probably tell were a little short on ideas.

Oh for info we are based in north lincolnshire.

Many thanks, Matt

As ever with Pratchett plays I will suggest the studio theatre club who originaly did it.

My suggestion however would be to use UV paint and some strips which when turned on will flash a little.

When we did it at my secondary school (more than a few years ago...) we did the glow thing by top lighting the anvil with an orange gelled narrow beam light. I can't remember what we used, but a CP60 or a profile should get the same effect.

It took a few different paints to find the one that glowed best, I think the final solution was silk emulsion in steely grey.

It all relies on there being more light on the anvil than the surrounding scene obviously.

We built one out of perspex and went through all the trouble of constructing a remote control mechanism for a light inside, but never got high enough light output.

How about giving your followspot operator the job, basically the same idea as J Pearce, but with the advantage that the anvil can be moved.

The disadvantage with using a followspot is that you don't get the eery toplight look, more a lit up frontlight. Could still work well though.

Or depending on the staging setup you could have a light at floor level backlighting the anvil with a bit of haze - would give a 'glowing halo' type effect.

Might be worth posting in lighting or moving the topic to get a wider range of suggestions
