venue cad plans

Does anyone know of a repository for venue floorplans, preferably in 3d form and ideally in Wysiwyg?

Are people prepared to make their own wyswyg venue plans available through the Blue room or would you have issues with sharing such work?

As an extension from this, does anyone like producing 3d plans of venues and would do it commercially, at a fair price?

Finally, does anyone have experience of using the Cast venue modelling service and want to share their thoughts on it?

Modelbox used to keep 2D CAD plans of most touring venues in the UK. I believe that the cost of the license was expensive. I think that Modelbox used to be part of White Light, but I heard on the rumour mill that it had broken free.

I've built more than a few venues in WYG, used to do nothing but that for about 18 months, I might be able to help. Depending upon how much detail you want (and how much you already have) I could turnaround a drawing fairly quickly.

With most of my work being conference based, I use Wysiwyg for producing visuals as well as for lighting designs.

What I need is acurate dimensions and enough visual detail for the venue to be recognisable, by venue I usually just need individual rooms although occasionally a larger part of the building is required.

The venues are predominantly hotels.

Currently I spend a considerable amount of time building the venue models myself and it may be useful to have an external source available instead.

Do many Wysiwyg users bother to feature much detail of the venue look or do you tend to only concentrate on the stage & lighting elements?

Grum, do you have any hotel function rooms modelled? Places such as Birmingham Metropole, London Metropole, Park Lane Grovsnor, QE2 conference centre to name a few.

All the venues I did were in the far / middle east and they were all theatres or TV studios so I don't have anything you're likely to want ready built.

However, it doesn't take too long to build a custom venue from a plan drawing and a couple of photos, the bit that takes the time is getting the plan in the first place (especially when you have to measure the venue yourself).

Whenever I've done this type of work I've built the main room reasonably acurately and just textured the walls and carpets to something that looks similar to the venue.

Personally I wouldn't go into too much detail. I once spent a whole day* drawing a glass dome that hung above the stage in a concert hall (don't ask me why it was there, I don't know) by the time I'd finished it looked amazing. The whole venue looked exactly like the architects paintings but when it finally came to producing the renders you only saw the dome in one shot.

Acurate detail is great but it is very time consuming and expensive and in the long run nobody will notice it. Get the venue roughly the right size, and the walls, floors etc. the right colours add tables and seating to give the client the impression of the room layout and then concentrate on making your stage (and what is on it) look good. Any more than that is time you could spend on chasing another job.

*the dome in question was made of over 100 different bits of glass that were several different colours and every piece was double curved.
