Theatre joint/Fake smoke

Hey everyone. Quick question: I am currently directing a production of Howard Korder's Boy's Life at the University of Maine in the U.S. In the production, one of the characters (Jack) smokes a joint onstage in several different scenes. If you are familiar with the piece, it is essential that Jack smokes onstage.

Are there any products out there that could achieve this?

A few things to consider:

- This is supposed to imitate a joint, so smoke MUST be seen coming out of the actor's mouth (preferably after they hold in the smoke for a few seconds, and then release it.)

- We absolutely can NOT have any "open flames" on stage. This includes lighters, and lit cigarettes (so the real thing it out).

- The product has to be fairly small, so that it can be gripped like a real joint.

I have seen the Revelle Prestige product, as listed in a previous post on this site, but unfortunately this product is both too large, and too expensive for our production.

Also, this production was recently revived on Broadway. Does anyone know what they did (did they smoke real cigarettes, and pretend they were joints?)

Thanks in advance for your responses to my question!

Moderation: This post and this one are useful places to start. The little search box on each page (next to Google) allows you to search just Blue Room content. I picked those two, but there are loads more going back to when the legislation was only a rumour. Have a read about in those posts.

I'll shut this one now as it covers the same ground - if you add a new post to those old ones, it brings it back up to the top in the 'View New Posts' function that most people use.
