Dodgecaliber Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I've got a client with one crazy idea after another.... The gig is in aid of Cancer Research and he wants to do what they did at live 8 - Thousands of names scrolling across the screens throughout the gig. I don't have media servers or screens to play with, I've spent most of my budget on mixers, cams, LCD's and fast folds, so I need something for an area of around 21ft wide by 3 or 4ft high. I was thinking multiple LCD's but thats too much hassle, a white cloth around a wooden construction is another idea but I think it would look tacky. Also, any ideas on how to project an image onto this? I.e what projector to aim for Can anyone suggest something for this?
Stee_cri1 Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 Also, any ideas on how to project an image onto this? I.e what projector to aim for Can anyone suggest something for this? Have you thought about a wide screen system, a system such as the barco system or the Vista spyder could do this feel free to pm me if you want more info hope this helps
Germaine Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 I'd second the widescreen idea and suggest looking at arkaos, it has a fully functional 21 day demo and I believe that includes multiscreen support, alternatively there are ome panasonic projectors out there that support "multi-blend"??? or something similar which I believe will also work
DanHerbert Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 You can acheieve this with a digital signage system, where you can select the content from say an excel spreadsheet to be taken as the feed and then this would be scrolling accross the bottom of the screen, if the same output is going to each screen then this would be quite straight forward! Let me know if you require further information! Dan
jason5d Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 you need an event screen made to the size you needthey are hung by string off a bar/truss with a scaff barat the bottom to keep it taught 21ft by 4ft screen & 4 projectors should do it, you'll have to work out the ratios Arkaos will do what you need right down to the edge blending, bung the text in and get arkoas to move it about. and we can make you up an event screen at a very good price
Toxopholist Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 It's not such a crazy idea as you might think... Vista Spyder or Barco encore could indeed help manage multiple projectors across a wide screen, but I think you might find the budget required to hire system and operator prohibitive... Some high end projectors like the Panasonic 10,000 and I think 7,000 lumen projectors do have on board edge blending technology an are indeed an option... however if your client can live with names appearing and disappearing rather than scrolling, you could bypass the whole need for edge-blending the projectors at all, just by not having names crossing the joins..., now you are just back to multiple projectors and laptops... If you absolutely have to have a scroll, you could go for one large projector, for a 21' wide screen you would probably get away with something around 7/8,000 lumen if it was a 16x9 native panel shape (think about the amount of light you are wasting spilling off the top and bottom in black with a 4x3 projector doing a ribbon of text) and assuming you could control the amount of ambient light falling on you screen. Also white text out of a black background will work even better the higher the contrast the better for projection... As for the scrolling, get someone to do you a flash movie for the night, give them the resolution of you screen surface, (resolution that your projector is running divided by width of screen multiplied by height of screen e.g. (1024 pixels/252inches)48inches= a workspace of 1024 pixels x 195 pixels to fit your names onto for a 21'x4' screen) and get them to creating a scrolling list of names... If scrolling isn't an issue, then for a 4' high image, to achieve the width you want you could get away with 4 smaller desktop projectors, in the 1-2,000 lumen range and 4 laptops just running PowerPoint with names , 3 or 4 at a time fading in and out randomly across the screen which can look quite nice. The projection is relatively straight forward for this one its managing the content that is always a bind, how are you going to manage your thousands of names... Typing them onto PowerPoint slides or into keynote will send you doolally... If DanHerbet has a more efficient solution from the world of digital signage then its definitely worth looking into... Rereading the post I looks a bit rambling, but I hope it gets enough of a point across... Your profile really doesnt give much info about where or who you are so I dont really know what level of knowledge you have or who would be near to you who might be able to help, but feel free to PM me with any questions you might have and I'll get back to you HTH Charlie
alex_hughes Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 This is more of a question than an answer, but could it be done with something like Avid and a video titling program, using Avid as your source into a projector?
Dodgecaliber Posted February 28, 2009 Author Posted February 28, 2009 Thanks for the help folks. I've got a guy building me a screen and I think we will just use a couple of projectors and get the text to fade rather than scroll. Oh and im a lighting tech from the West of Scotland! So I don't dive into AV too often!
starcloth Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 Animation cloth could do that with scrolling txt
