Non DMX hazer

Hey all.

we operate at school off a strand 200 desk (48chan version)

I have been asked to pick out the beams of light for a dance show and my first thought was Fresnel's on a tight focus with haze

but , since to my knowledge the desk cant take a hazer or indeed any other automated feature , for those of you who dont know the desk its only got one DMX input. , what model and make of hazer could I hire to use from a distance and still effectively fill a stage with haze . stage is 6m high (curtain hight) and 10m across and rectangular in shape.

Thanks

Sam

WHAT?

Many shows run haze without ever needing to plug it into a DMX system.

In fact many shows used haze before DMX was invented!

Either leave the hazer on for the duration of the show or use a stage technician to turn it on at the appropriate moments.

Er, the desk most certainly CAN operate a hazer - assuming it's a DMX hazer all you'll need is 1 or 2 spare DMX channels on the desk, set the hazer to address those channels and plug in the DMX line - voila!

But, as Jon rightly says, it's not essential to be able to control haze from the desk - get the crew to press the button every now and then.

make up an extension, We have a Jem hazer (cant remember which one) which runs quite happily over 50 feet of cable (only has prime, haze and output control on the remote.

IIRC (its been a while since I looked at it) it only uses 3 cores of a cable, and we used standard mic cable for the job (plus some DIN to XLR adaptors for just-in-case)

You connect the output of the desk to the input of the dimmers (not the other way around!), then connect the 'output' of the dimmers to the input of the haze machine. Or if that's a total pain you can hire a DMX splitter and connect the desk to the splitter, one output of the splitter to the dimmers, and another output of the splitter to the haze machine. Don't forget that you'll need to terminate the chain after the haze machine with the former solution, and you'll need to terminate both chains if you use a splitter.

Having said all that, I'm with the people above who are saying you don't really need control of it from the desk. I'm sure the crew are capable of pressing on or off every so often.

The Chilli's in Sam's venue don't have a DMX out so he will need to use a splitter somewhere if he wants the hazer controlled by DMX.

Sam other than using you current gear I can sort you out with the rig we used for the last dance show in that venue.
