alex_hughes
Hi guys, I want to make a cusion levitate, and I'm currently thinking fishing wire and a pulley. However There are obvious H&S implications; does anyone have any help/ideas they could lend? Many Thanks Alex
Andrew C
A few more details would help, like how high, does it need to track, and probably most important, will there be someone sitting on it?
alex_hughes
5 metres and yes they'll sit on it at some point. Just needs to go up and down
Ynot
5 metres and yes they'll sit on it at some point. Just needs to go up and downI'm assuming YOU mean that someone sits on it when it's on the deck. What I believe Andrew meant was 'will it need to MOVE whilst someone is sitting on it' Yes? kitlane
Assuming no one is lifted on the cushion (unlikely if you are considering fishing line) then what H&S implications do you foresee? Is is a really, really heavy cushion? Might someone decapitate themself on the line? Maybe I am missing something obvious but I can't think of a particularly serious H&S issue with this. Does that make you liable? Trip hazard for one; second is the projectile.
Ynot
Anything can have some aspect of H & S issues, even something as soft as a cushion - yes it could be tripped over. BUT the key is how YOU (or your group) deal with the potential for hazard. In the old days we used common sense - now you have to complete risk assessments (basically the same thing - just more paperwork now!!) But any risks associated with flying a soft cushion are NOT going to be anywhere near as complex or as risky as flying people or heavy objects. Jivemaster
Levitation by cantilever hidden in folds of upholstery may assist and have different risks and hazards.
kitlane
I'm not saying don't consider the risks, just that the risks are likely to be pretty trivial. Do you risk assess every item on the floor that could be tripped over? Check out this article on the HSE website. "Get a Life: says HSC"

"Get a Life: says HSC" I reckon tripping over things is a significantly greater risk than aflying cushion :-)
