ytbrewer@gmx.co.uk
Hi, I found this forum a while back whilst searching for something else theatre related. anyway, I am now registered and I would like some help: I have bought recently a set of four Martin miniMACs. I have fitted new lamps and they work a treat, I had them running their stand-alone auto trigger routine in master-slave, and was pleasantly suprised until... .... I saw when the heads where pointing at the ceiling, smoke being exhausted, from beside the lens of one of the fixtures. I immediately removed power and looked into it. when running the fixture, with the top cover off, on a slow colour scroll, smoke is coming from (I think) the glue which holds the dichoric filters to the wheel. I looked a little more at the others, from which I couldn't see any smoke (this time on a slow colour scroll, with the top cover removed) and these too, smoke. they appear to smoke most, when the colour is split, so that the divider/join is in the beam. as far as I can tell the cooling fan in the heads are running at full speed in all the heads, and there is no obvious difference in what or the way in which the dichorics are glued in. The lamps fitted are the HTI 6500K lamps from Osram, although they came direct through martin, and appear to be well aligned. I was looking to hire the fixtures out, but don't want the risk of them catching light! has anyone had similar experience/problems with martin minimacs or other products? what sort of adhesive is meant to be used and how should they be stuck to the colour wheel? Hope someone can help! Thanks
KevinE
This topic's been covered before on the BR so do a search for details on the correct silicone to use, if they're second hand then check 1.the correct lamp is fitted, 2. they're clean. 3. the correct fan is installed and blowing the right way. 4. The correct glue has been used on the dichroics. 5. Theyve been assembled properly if there's evidence of them being tampered with. If they've been out of use for a while it may just be smoke fluid and gunk thats burning off, but I guess you can tell which is which! I've certainly seen dichroics glued in with acrylic bathroom sealant and/or epoxy (araldite) which is nowhere near the right temperature and will burn. ytbrewer@gmx.co.uk
Hi, thanks, two things:covered on BR?? sorry I don't understand (new to forum) the fixtures are used/second hand but have been serviced and where sold by a trained martin service engineer. perhaps I should have mentioned this - the lamps fitted are genuine and recommended by martin (indeed came from martin) Thanks
HobitLight
covered on BR?? sorry I don't understand (new to forum)BR is an abbrieviation of Blue Room. He means that the topic has been covered in the past. Try using the :( search bar at the top right of every page to search the site for previous topics. KevinE
Surely a genuine Martin service engineer wouldn't have sent them out smoking??? Seems a pretty fundamental thing to me! We try searches on the BR first so we dont repeat ourselves and take up too much room!
Jamtastic3
Hmmm, you could just take the covers off and let them burn until the smoking stops and then replace the covers to see if burning re-appears. Another thing would be to recognise the type of smell that's coming off. If it's quite toxic then it could definitely be the glue. It reminds me when I went and put on a fresnel the other day ago that hadn't been used for a year. After about 30 seconds I felt like getting a fire extinguisher out on it! But it was just old dust burning.
niclights
It may well just be burning off something used to clean them, although not something I've ever seen. Perhaps worth calling the chap and asking?
ytbrewer@gmx.co.uk
Hi to all, Thanks - I had contacted the guy I bought them from, he suggested running them with the covers off - I have run them for about an hor with the covers off, but the smoking doesnt really subside at all. how long is reasonable to leave them on a slow colour scroll :( ? I am 100% sure it is from the wheel and not just dust, they are very clean inside.
Jamtastic3
Has anything happened to the sealant or dichroics by this point? It does sound odd if the smoking is still happening.
ytbrewer@gmx.co.uk
No, not that I can tell, it still appears unchanged - likewise the dichorics dont appear to be affected. they get hot, but not really overly so (or at least not by comparison to the others) I would expect them to be hot.
