adam2
As others post magenta most certainly is a colour by a any commonsense definition, though it is not a colour found in the spectrum. This website is very interesting for a detailed descrpition of light, colour, pigments, etchttp://www.handprint.com/HP/WCL/color1.html

Neil Hampson
Put simply Magenta is a colour that cannot exist as a single wavelength of light, it must be mixed from at least 2 other colours I.e red and blue. Imagine the specrum laid out in a curved line, (Infra)red at one end and (ultra) violet at the other. (see diagram) the curved line represents the 'colour' of each wavelength, the space in the middle is a representation of what can be mixed to form the full range of colours. the line at the bottom, called the line of purples can only exist as a mixture of colours. The triangle shown on the picture shows three light sourcers, RED, GREEN and BLUE, just like in a TV or any RGB source, any colour contained within this triangle can be mixed using these three single wavelenghts of light. the triangle is known as the colour Gamut. you can predict the colour mixing range of any two or three coloured sources by drawing a triangle between the three colours.http://www.microsoft.com/taiwan/whdc/images/device/sRGB1.jpgEdit, link to piccie didn't work. alex_hughes
wouldn't this mean that Cyan is also not a colour? There are gonna be some pretty peeved publishers if this is the case - I can see the lawsuits now! "you told me this was a magenta ink cartridge! Well, now I know Magenta doesn't exist, I know you're lying! This ink cartridge is a lie! you sir, and your whole stinking corporation are a lie!"- Angry customer to Epson Customer services
Neil Hampson
wouldn't this mean that Cyan is also not a colour? No, look at the curved line where the 'pure colours', made of single wavelengths of light are, Cyan is about 495nm It goes; Infra Red > Red > Orange > Yellow > Green > Cyan > Blue > UltraViolet
