Hello all

I am a 27yr old freelance lampy who is seriously considering C&G course; a course which is best suited for my professional capacity.

I have done a bit research on C&G website and it gave me a plethora of courses to choose from and to my amazement some of them cost (for example C&G 2330) four grand!

Would this be a good idea or am I barking up the wrong tree? The reason why I said the the latter because I know pro's who are not bothered about C&G or have not really needed it. But I think times are changing.

But for me I think...

A: It gives me more "backup" in my skills.

B: More and more venues would like you to have it, for example The National.

C: I can be a domestic sparky if things go sour in la la land (that's the ideal plan!)

D: Greater chance of a bigger pay cheque.

I just need a bit of advice from other lampy's or employers. I could ask them upfront but there is a good chance I sound like a pratt! :welcome:

Basically what I am trying to say is... what course would be most favorable? I think 2330... or not.

Thanks for reading

Al,

p.s apologies if we have been here before :D

which level of 2230 are you thinking of as ive been quoted that I can do the underpinning knowledge for £480 and then when I get a job the portfolio side for another £480 unless I can get an apprenticeship which clears all payment and makes it free...

but back to the topic its a great course kinda easy well level 2 was and it does seem most places want the chief lx to have it unsure about deputy might depend but yea worth doing for the back-up of being self employed as a sparky was my intention aswell

The 2330 is the underpinning knowledge part of an apprenticeship, the portfolio part is a seperate qualification (2356 from memory). The 2330 does not teach you anything of the practical side of being an electrician merely the background knowledge. The course does have a practical side but it is all done in perfect working conditions. If you are looking to get a career as an electrician then you really need to serve an apprenticeship with a good electrician who can teach you all the practical skills that could never be put into a text book. If you then wish to get into domestic electrics you will have to contend with 'Part P'. The topic of domestics is not one we discuss here so you should ask elsewhere for more information on it.

Thanks for the reply's, they're all very helpful. Like I say I am still in the research period to help my cause, but I am still very much enjoying my work as a freelancer. I don't think I'll make the leap into a domestic sparky just yet.

Thanks people :)
