3guk Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Hi Guys, Hoping you could help me, I'm looking for a decent sturdy cable tracer - you know the type, an oscillator that you clip on to one end of the cable and an amplifier probe to trace and test the line. I've gone through a fair few "skytronic" ones, they are so cheap they are pretty much disposable, but I'd really like one that I can rely on and is solidly built. I'm hoping maybe someone on here is an ex Telco or something like that, who can recommend something ? I know BT have something very similar if not the same for tracing phone lines, the engineer that was sorting one of the lines on site said in 20 years he had never had a problem with it short of changing the batteries, it gets chucked around in his van most days too. I did try to have a look but it appears to have been re-branded by BT. So anyone know of any solid makes ?
smalljoshua Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Where do you get these cheep ones from? I might be looking for one of those. Josh
3guk Posted February 17, 2009 Author Posted February 17, 2009 Tend to just buy them direct from skytronic. http://www.burntechshop.com/cable-wire-tra...4c16e336030cfeb That's the one I seem to buy almost on a weekly basis, although I can't vouch for the shop linked above, like I said, I buy direct from Skytronic.
dbuckley Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I've got a (quick google search) Wandel Goltermann tracer I got from RS; its intended for the Telco type thing. Burbles away as you seek the twowires of the pair and when you short them there's silence... So it appears that W+G got renamed and then taken over, and are now gobbled into a mob called JDSU who make the sucessor, the Tone Generator™ and Tone Tracer. Most amazing is how on earth "TOne Generator" could be registered as a trade mark...
tolley1466 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I bought a cable tester on eBay once that was a single male XLR plug. You can get similar things like a pink noise generator etc... Its worth while keeping an eye on eBay for little useful tools like these... Link.
bruce Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Someone doesn't know what a cable tracer is... even though the original poster describes it in the first line of their post...
derbydave Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 The one I have which is identical to the BT one is made by Tempo. It comprises the 500J tone detector, and the 600J tone generator. Also available as a "kit" in a carry case with a few extra bits which is the CP7 tone kit.

Or Fluke make quite a nice one in their Cat5 test range. If you're using it on mains circuits then the CEM LA-1012 is a winner
smalljoshua Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 There is one made by Tempo, CPC order code IN05152 or a Fluke one, CPC code IN04745 or another Tempo one CPC code IN02107 All taken from the CPC catalogue. Josh

Josh I have used both the first and second reccomendation in this post at work and I much prefer the fluke metre feels much better built and is much nicer to use.
Chappie Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Most amazing is how on earth "TOne Generator" could be registered as a trade mark...Some people will try and register anything! But TM doesn't mean it has been registered and has very little legal standing. ChappieTM
