mksound
I'm in the market to buy a new desk and I was considering the Allen and Heath GL 2800 32 channel. Just wondering what the feeling on it are. It seems to have all the features I require. I'll be using it for a mixture of jobs such as musicals, conferences and FOH for bands and small festivals. I would appricate any opinions or alternatives. I have a budget of aprox. €5000 inc flighcase. Thanks
jonathanhill
Its not a bad desk for the money. The major limitation of most A&H desks is the switching arrangement of the auxes which are usually in quads rather that duals or singles.
TallMike
I'd go digital mate - few years time your analogue desk won't be worth much!
Rob_Beech
I can recommend the GL2800(32) as I have one in my hire stock. It was one of the first ones produced and has performed flawlessly from start to finish on many hundreds of shows. I paid a damn sight less for it that you can buy them now unfortunately. However, whether it's the right desk for YOU is something I can't answer. I will agree that the digital trend is really getting under way now. I don't think there is really a suitable NEW desk within your budget but I can certainly recommend the smaller Yamaha offerings.
mervaka
if you're buying A&H, keep an eye out for the I-Live T series. I'm due to use one soon, so I'll be able to let you know the outcome
TallMike
yeah, that'll fit right into 5000 euros!
mervaka
well he's after a 32 channel desk. I could just say yeah the GL2800 is nice, but as you said earlier, analogue desks are about to plummet in price. I'm certainly not one to recommend a smaller digital desk retrofitted with a couple behringer ADA8000s, because I can imagine that being a royal pain in the arse to operate the input gain. mksound
Thanks for all the replies, I've no real interest in going digital I can't see the benifit of it for the majority of work I'll be doing it would be complete overkill in my eyes. I've built up a decent outboard rack over the last couple of years and it still as plenty of work left in it yet.
Rob_Beech
The outboard rack bit might have helped us in the original post. I see no problems with the GL2800 then.
Sound Juice
Really nice desks for small events like the ones you mention, I use one myself for simliar things.
Wilflet
I used one for a folk stage of a small festival once. Didnt have any complaints. Ive used far far worse, and if your not looking for overkill functionality then its def. one to look at.
grumpy 2
We have got one here and its very versatile in our situation. We regularly put on Bands, Musicals, DJ sets and just about anything else. We have a Soudcraft Ghost LE in the recording studio (could not afford a digital) and we have thought about using the GL2800 in the recording studio instead, as it routing is much easier for the students to understand and it is much more flexable. I used to work at the fairfield halls where we had a GL3300 40 that was a great desk. I bet you could pick one of those up for about £5000. TallMike
I know someone that's got an ML3000 going cheap!
i_hate_fisicks
The GL2800 is a reasonable desk. We've had one from not long after they came out, and it's not been perfect. It's had some definite Allen&Heathisms right from the first gig (dicky auxes and such like), but not enough to warrant sending it back (some might disagree). If it was my money however, I'd buy something better second hand. I don't know what the second hand market is like where you are, but over here there are loads of things available, and if you've got euros to spend, it might be worth looking at something from the UK market as you're getting a lot of pounds for your euros at the moment. Be careful though, it's easy to buy something duff.
