Monkfish Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Im looking to buy some 300 Watt (or around there) speakers to use on Awards dinners. I'm looking for something that looks quite pleasing to the eye but dont have a great deal to spend on them. Does anybody know of where I could find such a thing?Any help would be greatly appreciated
tolley1466 Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Will they be just for speech or music etc?

Some more information would help; - what size of events are they for - just roughly (50 people, 200 people, 600 people, etc)- what's going to be going through them? (will you also need subs?)- what's your budget (in £) An efficient speaker that is visually pleasing and of suitable quality for clear vocals and music reproduction as typically required at these type of events doesn't come particularly cheap. Why are you looking at 300watt speakers? Is there any reason the input power handling is of relevance? I would have thought the dispertion and how loud they'll play would be far more relevant. Tony
tolley1466 Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Just a thought, could you not hire them?
Monkfish Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 You will have to forgive my lack of knowledge in the Audio area. I only suggested 300 Watt as they are the speakers we currently have and they sound fine, so I was just looking for something of similar quality that look better. They will generally be for awards dinners of around 200 people. They will be needed for Clear voice and music replayed threw them.Hireing could be an option but preferably we would like to own the kit.
lostinvegas Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I am not sure of your budget or what you class are nice looking. If you on a budget, the Studio Spares Fortissimo range of speakers are a moulded plastic box and look similar to some of the powered Mackie range. They are 300 watts and are available as a powered unit or passive. I have used them in the past very successfully. They are a good budget speaker and about 300watts, they don't sound anywhere near as good as for eg a Nexo PS15 etc.. but for speach and background music they should be fine. IMO they look quite nice on a set of poles. http://www.studiospares.com/PA-Speakers/St...gle/invt/248260 I hope this helps. Chris
Pete Alcock Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Hi Monkfish, By "not much to spend" I guess you're looking to do the job really cheaply, but still have some half-decent speakers to use again at events in future. Probably not the approach that most folks here would condone, but hey, if needs must... These SX lookalikes would probably fit the bill. You'd need to spend about four times as much to gain a significant improvment. Don't go this route if it's a high-profile event though. If the client's paying the AV contractor thousands they will be expecting pristine audio and kit like D&B/Meyer etc. in which case you should hire in the good stuff. Pete.
