Lighting Spec for a small multi purpose room

Hi,

I've been given 6 hours to spec out a new room (the refurb company seem to keep all their cards very close to their chest right until the last minute). Anyway I need to spec out the lighting for a small 300 capacity room, which will be multi purpose in use. It will be predominantly used for DJ's for club nights, but also as a small gig room. For arguments sake, the budget is unlimited but I am looking for realistic suggestions.

Floor to ceiling height is 11'7" and at present no hanging points/trussing/lighting bars are in place. Also at present power isn't in place, so potentially any power supply can be applied. The amp and dimmer room will be housed behind this room, in an adjacent room. The PA will be running on a 32amp single phase power supply.

The room is 39' x 41' with two columns approximately 20' from the back wall and 13' from the left wall (column 1) and 13' from the right wall (column 2)which are each about 1'x1', each supporting beams running the entire length of the room (41')

We were thinking about either a fixed lighting bar or mini-truss on the back wall, between the beams, lighting out over a steel deck stage, effectively a front bar in between the columns and a bar at the back of the room, with lighting brackets on the back wall on the outside of the beams.

The back truss/bar would house some pars and movers, as would the front bar, with the rear bar and brackets hosting more traditional club lights (such as the Martin Wizard).

Assuming the budget was not an issue (I have been asked to spec the ideal rig) what lights would you put on there? I was envisioning 6 or 8 smart macs, 2 atomic 3k, as many par 56 or LED pars as we could fit and a large selection of cheaper (but suitably high end) DJ lights.

What would you recommend? Does anyone have experience with the small robe fixtures (colour spot 170AT, club spot 150CT, club spot 160CT), are they better than smart macs? Would LED pars be better than standard generics, thus nullifying any need to buy dimmers? How would you recommend powering your rig. IWB's or soca from a dimmer room?

All help/ideas gratefully received!

One of the venues I work in is basically the same as the room you've got here. We're mainly a club but do live music events at least once a week.

We have 8x MAC 250s, 2x Martin Atomic 3k, 4 Scanners (Genius Quasar), 7x Pulsar Chroma strips, and 24 channels of dimming, All of which are focused on the stage and only used to light the DJ from behind during club nights.

We have bars on the back of the stage, one on either side, and one directly above the start of the stage. We also have a circle truss in the middle of the dance floor.

Hey there,

What sort of effect are you trying to create? With clubs and bar type areas I like to create a lot of focus lighting - cheaper units picking out areas or doing specific effects. And then use a more modest numer of better units to do the more regular 'flashy flashy'.

At that size LED to light a stage area would be ok, as long as you don't want it super bright.

You didn't mention anything about control. If you need the rig to be flexible it what it can achieve and be able to be changed easily then you will need to spend more than if you just need it programmed and left to an LJ/DJ to op.

In our main room we run a Pearl Expert, and regularly receive toured live music shows (SJM,Live Nation promoted). In order to try and maintain as much compatibility between the main room and this smaller club/gig room we would probably be looking at a Pearl Tiger to operate, then if something goes wrong with the Expert the Tiger could step in during the repair period or vice versa if necessary.

I have had Showtec Arcbars recommended, does anybody have any experiences with these units?
