Desk advice please - analogue vs digital

I'm now quite interested in the difference between the o1v that everyone seems to be reccomending, and the o2R. Is there a particular reason why the o1V is better for live work than the o2R? Also, is the v2 or 96 (dependent on desk) version important for live work?

I'm looking to expand my channel count from 24 (analogue) to hopefully approaching around 40. I'm starting to work radio mics more often and the prospect of automation is quite attractive. This desk would be a sidecart to my existing desk (or vice-versa).

It strikes me that an 02R or 01V (or the 03D) seems the most pennywise option.

I'm going to be needing more than 8 mic inputs so some form of preamp is a necessity, be it analogue before the line inputs (channels 9 - 16 on the 02R) or digital (ADAT or an add on card). Another question is, which is the most sensible way to go? An ADAT card and a couple of Behringer 8 channel A/D's or a dedicated line input card for the desk, with an analogue preamp (probably behringer anyway) ?

I'd think that most people are talking bout the 01V96(either version of it) as it has more auxes and when using external pres the channels all have full eq, dynamics and routing flexibilty unlike the original 01. I'd guess that people are recommending 01V96s over and 02R96 for cost and size reasons, an O1V96 will fit in a 19" rack mount case with the external pre's underneath whereas an 02 won't.

The 02R96 is a nice mixer and, in the couple of times I've used one, it works quite well in a live sound situation.

Why not recommend it? The price is between two and three times that of the 01V96 (and the OP is already pushing his budget) and, though the photos on the Yamaha site don't really show this, it's a fairly big beast as well. Frankly, in the 02R budget you could easily get an LS9 and that would be my choice for live work. I suppose if an 02R came on the second hand market at a good price (and with a known history) it might be a good choice but, if we're talking new, it's out of the running.

Cedd mentioned the 03D as well. That would be my least favourite of the "old" Yamaha digital consoles and has what I consider a major flaw for live work. To use PFL on a channel, you have to select the channel then push a global PFL button way up in the top right hand corner of the surface. That doesn't sound like much but I never realised how much I use PFL until it became 2 button pushes with a stretch in the middle. Not recommended!

That's an original 02R, not the current 02R96 model. This isn't necessarily a deal buster and the price seems fair, but it might be worth researching the differences (can't help you myself...I've only used the 02R96). It may also be worth thinking about the age of the motorised faders. When they start to go, it's an expensive fix.

Thanks for that guys, sorry if I slightly sidetracked things with the introduction of the o2R into the mix. It probably isn't the right piece of kit for the OP, I was thinking about my own uses.

The o2R's I've been looking at are all second hand and are largely the older model (ebay is full of them!). I'd prefer an LS9 but it leaves me with the prospect of selling all my analogue outboard and desks in order to afford one, which then leaves me with no spare and no redundancy.

If I get anything, it really will have to be second hand, so I guess I'm just going to have to live with the reduced feature set of the older model. Studio manager compatibility would be great, but probably not worth the extra expense.

I've seen o2R's used very succesfully in musical theatre, which really is where I'm looking to be, with the occasional bit of band work on the side. I do have analoue outboard and desk as well, so much of the feature set isn't really needed.
